About the Team

As a member of the systems engineering and operations team, you will be responsible for building scalable solutions and infrastructure using the latest technologies. You will work as part of a team on projects that will benefit the Brightcove platform by increasing stability, efficiency and scalability. These solutions encompass provisioning, cloud operations, configuration management, security and networking.

About the Role

As a Principal Systems Engineer at Brightcove you will build, operate, scale and troubleshoot all of Brightcove’s infrastructure. The successful candidate will:

• Serve as a technical lead on demanding, cross-functional projects
• Provide expert knowledge in performance, security, scalability, architecture and engineering best practices
• Exert technical influence over multiple teams, increasing their productivity and effectiveness by sharing your deep knowledge and experience
• Play a significant role in career development of others and mentor individuals within the team and company on advanced technical issues
• Implement metrics for availability, performance and capacity monitoring
• Lead team initiatives or projects
• Optimize our infrastructure at both the software and hardware level by improving efficiency, scalability and stability
• Provide expertise in understanding system interdependencies and limitations
• Create optimizations to reduce or control technology-related bottlenecks
• Rally support, maintain enthusiasm and drive objectives as an individual contributor, project leader and functional manager
• Show effective use, understanding and tailoring of systems engineering concepts, principles, and theories
• Keep up to date with the latest technology trends and make intelligent suggestions to other members of the systems engineering team
• Provide operational coverage as part of an on-call pager rotation
• This is a hands-on role! Be excited about getting your hands dirty

About the Candidate

• Minimum 7+ years experience
• 2+ years leading, not necessarily managing, a highly functional team
• Advanced knowledge of Cloud computing platforms (e.g. AWS, GCE)
• Expert understanding of Linux/UNIX
• Strong understanding of Ethernet, IP switching/routing, TCP
• Experience with systems performance tools
• Fluent in at least one general-purpose language (e.g. Ruby, Perl, Python)
• Understanding of virtualization and IaaS platforms and deployments
• Experience working with highly available, large scale deployments
• Experience with configuration management (e.g. Chef, Puppet)
• Experience with large scale storage systems and distributed file systems
• Distributed source control (Git)
• Experience with relational and NoSQL databases
• Experience with packaging and deployment strategies
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills - must be able to write clear reports, specifications, proposals and effectively discuss them with other members of a multi-disciplinary team
