Position Summary:The Vice President Enterprise Technology will report into the CTO of athenahealth and will lead a global team responsible for developing and transforming all of athenahealth’s strategic business applications. The VP will be responsible for all application development using the latest cloud platform in support of all core business functions, including business analysis, governance, project management, application development and application support.
This role will have direct responsibility for the company’s internal applications with a focus on delivering cloud based applications and services strategy. He/She will play an influential role as a member of the central technology, Information Systems and Business leadership team.
Responsible for shaping technology and business strategy, making investments and prioritizing trade-off decisions, reducing costs, negotiating and managing external vendors and platforms.
Essential Functions (Duties and Responsibilities):

  • Own, build, socialize and evangelize Enterprise Business applications, as well as develop and maintain a committed and aspirational roadmap
  • Ensure that the architecture objectives are consistent with long term business objectives by participating in the analysis, evaluation and development of long range strategic technology planning
  • Lead Applications development and support, Integration and Analytics technologies which are a mix of both on premise and cloud offerings
  • Set goals and objectives for direct reports, including providing feedback through performance appraisals and day-to-day discussions
  • Shape and share Office of the CTO’s vision and strategy to help teams understand the overall direction and the "why" behind decisions; ensuring the Roadmap is well understood throughout the organization and serve as dynamic lead to manage emerging requirements and initiatives
  • Partner with colleagues and Enterprise teams to provide strong project management and governance processes for the overall portfolio
  • Promote agile application development and robust processes
  • Monitor adherence to budgets and make the best use of resources
  • Lead a diverse team across multiple locations, including all recruiting, staffing, role definition, goal setting and performance management
  • Represent the accomplishments and roadblocks of their organization to the CTO to remove obstacles and incentivize outstanding performance.
  • Champion a robust talent management process; provide candid feedback and high impact coaching to managers and individual contributors
  • Build vs. Buy vs. Adopt: Cultivate awareness and opportunities for new & existing open source technologies; understand where & how to leverage them, or when it’s more appropriate to build from scratch
  • Leverage 3rd party application services and consulting expertise as appropriate.
  • Define, maintain and enhance relevant IT service levels and metrics.
  • Support IT leadership functions including annual planning, budgeting, status reporting, executive presentations and continuous improvement.
  • Implement and manage application-related key controls, information security, compliance processes and ongoing audit support.

Education & Experience Required:

  • 20+ years’ experience with executive experience leading teams in a modern technical environment
  • Must have substantial history and experience managing delivery of custom applications, both building applications from scratch, and integrating custom and/or vendor solutions.
  • Experience with best of breed vendor-based Enterprise Software solutions and with cloud based technologies, including;
  • People/process HR tools, employee intranet and other internal CMS content management systems, financial applications, Sales and CRM tools.
  • ITSM Service Management, SSO Single Sign-on platforms
  • Substantial systems integration experience
  • DW/BI - data warehouse business intelligence initiatives.
  • Outstanding execution skills with ability to deliver on strategic concepts using rigorous methodologies and effective project management.
  • Extensive experience working in an Agile environment preferred
  • Hands-on, collaborative leadership style with a heavy focus on business engagement
  • Ability to operate in a high-energy, high-intensity and evolving environment.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, including ability to craft and deliver presentations to senior business executives.
  • Proven track record of delivering large-scale, cross-functional projects.
  • Practical knowledge of standardized application delivery processes and controls.
  • Experience with reporting Sarbanes-Oxley and/or key controls pertaining to IT application management.
  • Practical expertise with IT governance, annual planning, steering committee facilitation, etc.
  • Experience in building teams and organizational development; hiring, mentoring, and training teams; and executing on career development programs.
