The role will be part of a team of designers, engineers, and operators responsible for delivering world-class network services in a complex, 24x7, mission-critical, production environment. The Senior Network Engineer must be highly proficient in both WAN, campus, and data center network technologies.The Senior Network Engineer will report to the Senior Manager of Network Engineering and work in our headquarters in Watertown, Massachusetts.
Specific responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Build and operationalize a highly available network.
  • Configure and maintain all routers, switches and firewalls (Cisco, Juniper)
  • Provide superior customer service to internal and external clients, including response to escalations, proactively notifying customers of network issues, and assessing and communicating business impact
  • Participate in 24x7 on call rotation
  • Track, report, and proactively address network capacity issues based on business forecasts
  • Work with third-party partners to provision site to site IPSEC VPNs
  • Configure and utilize a variety of network management tools including Tail-F NCS and Cisco CSM
  • Configure and maintain Aruba wireless infrastructure
  • Keep up to date with new technologies and best practices to introduce new features across the organization.
  • Identify inefficiencies and make suggestions for process improvements
  • Develop, manage and execute controls in support of athenahealth’s complex compliance landscape (SOX, SAS70, PCI, HIPAA)
  • Handle ticket escalations from the network operations team and in accordance to Service Level Agreement requirements
  • Troubleshoot, isolate and resolve complex network problems
  • Support and work within the ITIL support structure for Change, Problem and Capacity management
  • Mentor network operations team members on network technologies and best practices
  • Work directly with LECs and IXCs to provision and troubleshoot WAN connectivity
  • Work directly with Voice team to ensure VoIP services meet or exceed all quality targets

Required Skills:

  • At least three years’ experience designing, implementing and operating multi-site, high-availability, converged networks
  • At least three years hands-on experience with routers, switches, firewalls, and VPN’s
  • At least three years of experience working in a production, 24x7 environment
  • Extensive experience with 802.11 and wireless monitoring and troubleshooting
  • Extensive experience with BGP, EIGRP, and/or OSPF
  • Strong knowledge of TCP/IP and VPNs
  • Understanding of overlay network technologies
  • Operational experience with Netflow, SNMP, and network monitoring technologies
  • Interest in scripting and network automation
  • Familiarity with different operating systems including Windows and Linux
  • Strong documentation skills
