The Digital Operations Lead is a Director level position reporting to the PDL Technology Executive. This position will be accountable for the day-to-day data center operations and Service Management within eCommerce. It will strive to deliver continuous improvement to service stability and scalability of production and non-production environments. Strong leadership will be required to effect transformation of the DevOps CI/CD pipeline operations support structure, from the current bimodal support model (where operations are split between RBS and PDL) to one which is owned solely led by PDL. This role is also responsible for building and directing the teams that provide reliable, performant, secure, flexible and scalable infrastructure hosted on-premises and/or thru public cloud providers (Azure) for PDL solutions.  You will be key stakeholder in setting, executing and supporting the on-prem and cloud strategy that supports the PDL of the future.  The role will be critical for the successful transformation of eCommerce operations to a multi-region Azure infrastructure.

 

The Director will be an effective and influential communicator able to ensure that the backlog of stability & scalability improvements are delivered through developer scrum teams. This role will benefit from an individual with experience in a similar microservice based eCommerce business who is able to work within an Agile delivery model and can help accelerate PDL’s journey to Azure Cloud based operations.

 

Recipe for Success - What's “in store” for the role

  • Overall responsibility for stability and scalability of PDL Production and Preproduction environments
  • Manage the backlog of stability & scalability recommendations delivered through existing scrums
  • Maintain pipeline automation tools (provided by platform engineering) utilized by the autonomous Scrum teams to deliver small but frequent changes
  • Lead overall integration between level 1,2 & 3 support across service management, infrastructure, DevOps and Development
  • Transition of the teams that provide these support services today from Retail Business Services to Peapod Digital Labs
  • Transform Support Operations from on premise infrastructure technology stacks to Azure cloud including building a team with the experience, capability and skillsets to support Agile/DevOps operations in Azure
  • Achieve operational efficiencies that would be otherwise be unattainable with the current on-prem capabilities.
  • Enable NEW service offerings and capabilities designed to enable our stakeholders to more easily migrate to Azure
  • Proactive reliability engineering through the introduction of Chaos Engineering into PDL

 

The Essentials in Your Cart - The required ingredients  

  • Degree level educated, preferably in Business, IT or Software Engineering
  • Certified Scrum Master (CSM) certification or equivalent preferred
  • 12+ years IT experience
  • 5+ years’ experience in eCommerce business systems
  • 5+ years’ experience in Product Management
  • 5+ years’ Scrum Agile methodology
  • 5+ years’ managing on premises infrastructure operations
  • Experienced in working with Development and UI teams
  • Comprehensive knowledge of monitoring and observability tooling (eg Datadog)
  • Deep knowledge of Infrastructure as Code tools (eg Terraform)
  • Knowledge of software development and testing practice that support service stability & scalability
  • Agile Scrum knowledge as the “product owner” managing the stability and scalability backlog
  • Broad understanding of eCommerce business processes and interdependencies
  • Experience in working with Development and UI teams
  • High-level technical understanding (development methodologies, phases, etc.)
  • Thorough understanding of Cloud operations and cloud products
  • Knowledge of chaos engineering principles and practices
  • Experienced within Scrum Agile methodology
  • Proven track record in working collaboratively across functional areas to drive results
  • Deep experience with project/knowledge management tools like Jira, Slack and Confluence
  • Strong Technology, application development and eCommerce background
  • Proven track record of managing software product roadmaps
  • Experience with design, configuration, migration and deployment experience related to cloud platforms
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills; presentation experience to small and large groups both internally and externally
  • Fast learner and self-starter
  • Leadership presence and gravitas
  • Interact effectively with representatives from Technology and Business Partners
  • Strong presentation skills with ability to present to small and large groups
  • Flexibility to work with teams, individuals and executives
  • At ease discussing product development and implementation with the technical teams as easily as discussing product strategy with the business stakeholders
  • Able to establish credibility with stakeholders, and use influence to build consensus to achieve goals
