WHO WE ARE:

ActBlue builds and maintains a powerful online fundraising platform for Democratic campaigns, progressive organizations, and nonprofits working to create a better future. We put power in the hands of small-dollar donors by making it easier for grassroots supporters to make their voices heard and by helping thousands of groups — from presidential candidates to environmental organizations — build people-powered movements.

We’re a nonprofit organization, and our team has a big impact on the future of our country. Each and every one of us, from the political activists to the tech innovators to the customer service pros, is fully committed to our mission. We're excited to grow this team and get ready to take on even bigger challenges as we look toward 2020 and beyond.

THIS ROLE:

The Communications and Marketing Team is looking for an exceptional copywriter to join ActBlue’s Email Team. The Email Team does more than just write fundraising and marketing emails. It’s a group of hardworking and fun people who reward creativity, exploration, and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. We seek out talented individuals who can grow, think, create, and achieve while having a good sense of humor.

As an email storytelling lead in a cross-functional marketing squad, the copywriter will have a rare opportunity to learn and evolve ActBlue’s voice and branding within the email marketing program. Reporting to the Email Director, you will be responsible for pitching creative ideas, working alongside designers and data scientists to create a seamless experience for subscribers, and writing copy that surprises, delights, and converts. This is not a fundraising job, so you will not be responsible for writing fundraising emails.

The ideal candidate is a strategic wordsmith and knows how to connect with people. They find joy in bringing concepts to life and working with others to create the absolute best content possible for our subscribers. The right person for the job is authentic, engaging, smart, and writes email copy to match! And of course, a passion for empowering small-dollar donors and building grassroots movements is a must.

Responsibilities:

  • Push ActBlue’s email marketing content forward with exceptionally creative ideas, collaborative skills, and strategic thinking.
  • Learn and internalize ActBlue’s branding and voice.
  • Incorporate strategy into your storytelling by taking findings from past emails and applying them to your copy.
  • Collaborate with data, design, and content teams to create incredible marketing emails that connect people to our brand.
  • Constantly improve and innovate. There should be a “Wow” factor in every single piece of copy you write.
  • Continually help shape and guide the email marketing team’s content.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2+ years of experience writing effective and engaging content for email marketing programs.
  • Ability to pair creative writing with design, data, and analytics.
  • Portfolio that demonstrates exceptional writing and conceptual thinking.
  • Experience working alongside designers and data scientists.
  • Attention to detail — you have an eagle eye for typos and errors.
  • Problem solver — you enjoy a challenge.
  • Find joy in geeking out over everything email.
  • Desire to empower small-dollar donors and help build grassroots movements.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working for a leading brand, creative, or advertising agency.
  • Basic political knowledge or experience is a plus.

LOCATION & COMPENSATION:

ActBlue’s office is located in Davis Square in Somerville, MA, just a few blocks from Boston’s MBTA Red Line train. This posting is for a full-time, in-office, salaried position. We offer a competitive salary and a generous compensation package, which includes commuter benefits; fully paid and trans-inclusive health, dental, and vision insurance; an employer-sponsored 401k contribution plan; and a flexible time off policy.

Salary Range: $55K - 65K based on experience level

An Insider's view of ActBlue

How would you describe the company’s work-life balance?

ActBlue has incredible work life balance! Unlimited PTO is a lifesaver. I organize outside of work for local elections, mutual aid, & direct action, and sometimes that happens during the workday. Having sufficient time to rest also helps me be more motivated & enjoy work. The culture treats PTO with respect & no one is guilted for taking time off.

Crystal

Data Engineer

What projects are you most excited about?

Our team is in the beginning stages of a Roles and Permissions overhaul for our Campaign and Non-Profit users. We will be adding the ability for these entities to grant varying access levels for different users. We hope this will allow for more users to be added to the platform, while keeping their data secure.

Nate

Senior Software Engineer

How has your career grown since starting at the company?

When I first started at ActBlue in 2019, I didn’t write any code. Thanks to the supportive, mentorship-focused approach within the organization, I was given the space to learn and grow my engineering skill set. I paired regularly with my peers, did coursework, and was empowered to take on projects outside of my comfort zone.

Alli

Senior Product Designer

How do you empower your team to be more creative?

Fostering creativity starts with trust. I think innovation comes when we give individuals the autonomy to solve problems, not just build prescribed solutions. Our team collaborates early and often, empowers individuals to understand the why instead of just the what, and encourages risk through a culture of learning through iteration.

Ani

Senior Engineering Manager

What are some things you learned at the company?

As a more "seasoned" member of ActBlue, I appreciate the company's commitment to Diversity and Inclusion. I learn something new almost every single day. Working here is helping me be a better person.
