We’re looking for a Senior eCommerce Product Counsel who is not only a legal eCommerce expert, but is business-minded and not afraid to pave the way as we continue to build innovative new ways to digitize life’s most high-risk and important transactions in a way that improves accessibility while enhancing fraud protections. 


In this role, you’ll report to the General Counsel and work closely with senior leadership and stakeholders across the enterprise. You'll provide practical legal advice on new and existing product initiatives, focusing on legal and regulatory requirements related to electronic and digital signatures, records, payments. You'll not only provide guidance but help develop compliant ways to responsibly remove legal roadblocks to enable the business to scale and grow. 


You'll need to be proactive and engaged, enjoy working with a cross-functional team both internally and externally, be very excited about technology and e-commerce, as you'll be a critical part of the future of Notarize.

As our Senior Counsel, you will:

  • Serve as our resident subject matter expert advising on all things “e” including - electronic and digital signatures, eNotary laws, ADA compliance, advertising, ePayments, PKI compliance, and digital identity.
  • Interpret, advise, and provide practical business counsel to the Product, Engineering and Operations teams on applicable laws, rulings and regulations relevant to e-commerce and digital signatures, including in the areas of consumer protection and marketing.
  • Utilize your keen analytical skills to develop creative solutions to problems.
  • Support and collaborate with the Team team to evaluate, communicate and manage legal risks to internal stakeholders and external parties.
  • Work with our business teams to identify and assess legal implications of our product.
  • Be a utility player taking on opportunities and add value in practice areas beyond commercial transactions as needed
  • Stay current on industry, commercial, intellectual property, open source, privacy and other laws, regulations, and developments to be able to give the most effective advice.

What we're looking for:

  • A JD with 8+ years experience. Must be admitted and in good standing in any US jurisdiction.
  • Familiarity with legal issues affecting the Internet and e-commerce (such as consumer protection SaaS, advertising, and payments).
  • Hands-on experience as an in-house attorney or extensive experience as outside counsel for tech/SaaS companies developing and launching new products and services, including advising on the use of technology to resolve issues regarding regulation.
  • In-depth understanding of PKI, including digital certificates, validation authority management, key management systems, and similar identity validation infrastructure and with associated guidance and standards.
  • Ability to translate between business and technical risk and communicate clearly to business and technical partners within the organization. 
  • Demonstrated startup initiative - ability to self-manage, find creative ways to work through barriers, actively learn necessary skills, and manage projects to completion with minimal supervision. 
  • Proven communication and presentation skills - ability to collaborate with a wide variety of stakeholders (internal teams, customers, regulators, partners, etc.) on legal and regulatory compliance issues.
