Root was founded on the belief that car insurance is broken, and we set out to change it. We’re harnessing the power of technology to revolutionize this archaic, complicated industry. Using machine learning and mobile telematic platforms, we’ve built one of the most innovative insurtech companies in the world.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a Lead Engineer to join our Telematics Platform team. As a Lead Engineer, you will be a strong technical leader for the team in the realm of data engineering, feature serving, and data science enablement. You’ll lead your team both through coaching and mentorship and also by example as a primary contributor each iteration. In partnership with your Staff Engineer and Engineering Manager, you’ll clearly define problems the team will solve on a quarterly time horizon and plan the projects and experiments that will solve those problems.

At Root we’ve built an end-to-end telematics solution with in-house data collection and scoring pipelines. Our data scientists leverage this system to build telematics based risk segmentation for pricing insurance using modern quantitative methods. This produces a best in class driving score that serves as a core component of our company strategy. We’re looking to accelerate our lead in this space by building upon our Telematics Platform to enable more flexibility, faster iteration, higher throughput, and better segmentation, all at a lower cost. You will help us achieve these goals as we look to further improve our telematics scoring capabilities while also building a best in class telematics product experience.

Root is a technology company revolutionizing personal insurance with a pricing model based upon fairness and a modern customer experience. Using the power of telematics, Root offers customers auto insurance based on how they drive, not based solely on their demographics. With its technology-forward products, Root is working to fundamentally change an industry for the better.

Root is a “work where it works best” company. Meaning we will support you working in whatever location that works best for you across the US. We will continue to have our headquarters in Columbus to give more flexibility and more choice about how we live and work.

Salary Range:  $140,000 - $175,000 (Bonus and LTI Eligible)

How You Will Make an Impact

  • Contribute significantly to the work of the team each iteration through direct coding, code review, and project leadership
  • Document designs and plans for projects with clear writing and diagrams that give the team and its stakeholders clarity on the work to be done and the expected outcomes
  • Coach and guide engineers on your team in writing accurate, resilient code
  • Build relationships with our partners in Product Management, Data Science, and other areas of the business in order to ensure the team is working on the best things each quarter
  • Improve the performance of the team by suggesting code patterns, process improvements, and technical upgrades
  • Lead in incident response ensuring we proactively communicate and resolve issues

What You Will Need to Succeed

  • 4+ years as a software engineer
  • 2+ years leading software teams
  • Expertise in Python, Terraform, SQL, and Spark
  • Expertise in Cloud Architecture
  • Experience in ML development lifecycle and deployment (MLOps)
  • Exposure to telematics or sensor data collection systems
  • Proven experience in planning experiments and projects that are completed successfully by your team and achieve the expected outcomes or drive significant learning
  • Excellent communication skills both with engineering colleagues and team stakeholders

As part of Root's interview process, we kindly ask that all candidates be on camera for virtual interviews. This helps us create a more personal and engaging experience for both you and our interviewers. Being on camera is a standard requirement for our process and part of how we assess fit and communication style, so we do require it to move forward with any applicant's candidacy. If you have any concerns, feel free to let us know once you are contacted. We’re happy to talk it through.
