The Research and Scientific Insights team at Indigo Headquarters in Charlestown, MA is seeking a summer 2019 intern to develop applications of RNA sequencing to identify genes associated with desired microbial behaviors. The intern will familiarize themselves with the microbial characterization assays performed at Indigo, and adapt these assays to measure microbial gene expression during these assays. Further, the intern will assess the taxonomic diversity of microbes represented in our collection to determine which microbes will yield the most useful information from RNA sequencing studies to best inform Indigo’s product pipeline. This is an exciting opportunity to employ the scientific method in an industrial setting to make discoveries that improve Indigo’s ability to make beneficial microbial products. This role is expected to require 40 hours per week for 3 months during the summer in Charlestown, MA.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and conduct experiments to measure gene expression of microbes under controlled assay conditions
  • Purify RNA from diverse microbes and prepare RNA sequencing libraries
  • Computationally analyze RNA sequencing data to identify genes associated with desired microbial behaviors
  • Make rigorous notes of experiments and communicate results across Indigo teams to enable application of results

Competencies:

  • Background in molecular biology, preferably with a focus on microbes or environmental plant-microbe interactions
  • Laboratory experience, specifically with nucleic acid extraction and sequencing library preparation
  • Experience designing and applying protocols to novel situations
  • Experience with computational data analysis, preferably with Python
  • Proven track record of completing scientific research projects
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to communicate scientific results clearly to different audiences
