The co-op will support the screening and late stage development of identified microbes within the bioprocessing pipeline. They will assist in developing assays in support of the liquid state candidates and refining assays currently being utilized. The co-op student will be able to familiarize themselves with dozens of unique microorganisms and provide insight into potential intricacies of their specific growth needs and help identify key nutrients and compounds which could potentially be beneficial for the overall stability of the organism from a product perspective.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Process time course samples for liquid fermentation experiments
  • Maintain databases for liquid fermentation experiments
  • Run, troubleshoot, and refine current plate-based assays used for offline analysis of liquid fermentation samples
  • Independently research and report on microbes and potential compounds/nutrients related to stability
  • Design, execute, and present on an independent research project pertaining to either process improvements or product stability
  • Batch media, buffers, and supplementary solutions and sterilize them for liquid fermentation experiments
  • Clean, assemble, and sterilize fermentation equipment
  • Familiarize themselves with all equipment and technology associated with liquid fermentation development experiments
  • Maintain a lab notebook with all protocols, notes, and results both electronically and paper
  • Assist other members of the Liquid State Fermentation team with daily tasks and experiments
  • Potentially cross-train with the Solid State Fermentation team of Bioprocessing to gain exposure into alternative fermentation methods

COMPETENCIES

  • Fluent in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Competent in Aseptic Technique
  • Familiar with Microbiology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, or previous experience working in a laboratory environment
  • Transparent in their communications to efficiently utilize their time while at work
  • Honesty in the number of projects they can complete
  • Willingness to complete all tasks assigned within a reasonable amount of time
  • Ability to work both autonomously and closely with team members on projects
  • Ability to both give and receive feedback
  • Familiar with data visualization software (Spotfire, JMP)
  • Personable and able to interact with various personality types
  • Willingness to stay until all tasks are completed, within reason
  • Having a track record of punctuality is a must

Location

On the edge of Charlestown, we are within walking distance to restaurants and bars. The Sullivan Square T and bus stop is also right next door! We are currently working remote/hybrid with the exception of our fantastic Biotrinsic team who work from the office and lab space here.
