For Summer 2022

As a Manufacturing Engineer Intern, you will have opportunities to learn and manage the manufacturing assembly, test, and packaging processes of all Markforged products, including printers, furnaces, and other systems. You will report to the Operations Engineering Lead and participate in building strong relationships with contract manufacturers (CM) and critical sub-tier suppliers while working closely with internal engineering and operation teams. Ideally, you will also have a strong background in engineering and quality.  In addition, this individual must be self-motivated, have exceptional communication skills, handle multiple project assignments, and be willing to learn and adapt within a fast-paced engineering organization.

Opportunities Abound for our Interns!
  • Learn to Identify DFM/A opportunities, mitigate project/products risks, and perform cost/benefit analysis
  • Improve the manufacturability and cost of hardware built at 3rd party manufacturers through tools such as process capability studies, process/test design, cell layouts, time-studies, inspection protocols, supplier qualification, continuous improvement projects, and work instruction documentation
  • Design and implement robust tooling/fixture solutions to improve process control and production throughput
  • Support process qualifications and capability studies (custom test fixture validation, Gage R&R, DOEs, FMEA’s, etc)
  • Oversee the development, generation, and validation of work instructions, tooling/fixtures, equipment calibration, testing, quality forms, and drawings throughout the NPI process
  • Assist in dual sourcing and supplier launch initiatives to scale up existing product lines
  • Provide exceptional production support on people, processes, materials, and equipment to achieve operation principle goals (safety, quality, service, and productivity)

  • Gain the skills to drive accountability with internal and external stakeholders on project deliverables

Important Note:

Although we list out what we generally look for, we are very likely missing other attributes and skills you have that could make you a great fit but are not currently listed. The point we’re getting at, it doesn’t hurt to take a chance and apply! Research has shown this especially applies to women and other marginalized groups, who tend to apply if they check 100% of every box, versus men who apply if they hit roughly 60%.

What you have:
  • Working toward a Bachelor's degree in engineering (Mechanical, Electro-Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering preferred)
  • An interest in product-based electromechanical systems
  • Passion for manufacturing and continuous improvement
  • A sharp analytical and mechanical mindset with a desire to apply them toward real-world manufacturing problems

  • Experience with change control systems (EPDM, Github, ERP, and PLM systems) is a plus
  • Skills to analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve production assembly/test problems
  • Conduct time studies to create baselines and identify opportunities for efficiency gains and cost savings
  • Knowledge of production best practices such as LEAN, Kaizen, 5S, and Six Sigma
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills - can convey complex technical topics in simple terms across internal departments and external partners

An Insider's view of Markforged

What are some social events your company does?

Markforged really cares about giving employees the opportunity to celebrate company milestones and bond outside of the context of work. We celebrate product launches, big wins, and holidays with outings. In addition to company milestones. My personal favorite social “events “ are the informal Friday afternoon happy hours at the office.

Daniel

Product Marketing Manager

How do you collaborate with other teams in the company?

One Team is a company value here. When making a 3D printer, we provide a dedicated build space to a cross-disciplinary team of engineers. These spaces become cultural bastions for promoting camaraderie, great music playlists, and company memes. This fun and inspirational environment for teams to collaborate is why our products are best-in-class.

Ariel

Principal Software Engineer

What makes someone successful on your team?

For someone to be successful on my team, I think they have to be enthusiastic and passionate about our systems and materials. We are always trying to make improvements, and being excited about how you can help our systems improve is essential! Passion and positivity have been the two qualities that helped me grow the most on my team.

Umema

Materials Print Engineer

How do your team's ideas influence the company's direction?

Markforged’s greatest asset is our #OneTeam. This is our DNA. All of the great ideas we’ve seen come to life at Markforged are because of our employees. I truly believe that we have the best team in additive manufacturing! It is because of their intellect, passion, commitment, and creativity that we’ve gotten to where we are today.

Shai Terem

Chief Executive Officer

What's the biggest problem your team is solving?

I think one of the most challenging things as a print systems engineer is learning all the technical and non-technical aspects of our business. We have to know a lot, kind of like a jack of all trades. We have to have our fingers on the pulse of a lot of different teams so that we have a holistic picture of what's going on.
