Charles River Analytics is developing enhancements to our state-of-the-art user-centered enterprise system for members of the U.S. Armed Forces. This effort is concerned with understanding and making decisions about human behavior, monitoring and optimizing missions, and communicating and collaborating within and across teams. This is an excellent opportunity to research and propose novel solutions to challenging problems within a well-defined domain, and to see those solutions implemented in operationally deployed software.

This role works both with our team of scientists and engineers, and with users of our deployed system to: (1) research and design user-focused, requirements-driven systems; (2) provide input as engineers implement these designs throughout the software development process; (3) explore tangential domains for areas that would benefit from novel, or existing, capabilities; and (4) generate proposals to apply our novel solutions to other problems and/or domains.

The candidate must be able to quickly parse scientific papers and fuse this research with innovative concepts to propose solutions addressing domain challenges. In addition to researching and designing quality user interfaces, the candidate must be able to clearly communicate his or her rationale and underlying analysis through written and verbal means.

Major Responsibilities/Activities:

  • Research, design, and support development of novel decision support systems
  • Interact with customers, users, and subject matter experts to analyze and understand domain challenges and needs
  • Analyze and design visual representations to support solving complex problems
  • Work with the principal investigator to identify points of intersection across multiple, similar, domains
  • Contribute to proposals, reports and papers, and present work at briefings and conferences as appropriate
  • Work with software engineers to develop envisioned technology solutions

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD, Master’s, or Bachelor’s degree in Human Factors Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction, Cognitive Science/Psychology, or a related field (e.g., Computer Science with HCI or Interaction Design focus)
  • At least 1 year of relevant experience
  • Knowledge elicitation and user engagement experience
  • Experience with design and prototyping tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Balsamiq, Axure)
  • Proven ability to generate proposals, publications, or similar written materials
  • U.S. Citizenship

Desired, but not Required:

  • Proven experience designing user-focused interfaces and systems with a strong aesthetic design sense and superior attention to detail
  • Robust portfolio of interface design and writing that shows high quality of work
  • Experience directly interacting with customers and/or users
  • Experience performing literature reviews and using the results to recommend system improvements and/or enhancements
  • Experience in behavior analysis, social dynamics, persuasion, and/or international marketing
  • Experience with Agile/Scrum development processes
  • Experience with the SBIR/STTR process

Benefits:

Charles River Analytics offers competitive compensation plus bonus and profit-sharing, with an attractive benefits package including: up to 92% employer-paid medical and 100% employer-paid dental, vision, life and disability insurance, paid maternity/paternity leave, tuition reimbursement, monthly gym allowance, free parking, generous paid time off, and a casual environment.
