At MassMutual Ventures, we invest in entrepreneurial companies that possess the potential to reshape their industries. MMV combines an experienced venture capital investment team with the global reach of a Fortune 100 financial services company, and our team has built an industry reputation for being return-oriented while delivering significant value from the corporate relationships we help to create.

MMV is a small, non-hierarchical, and inclusive team of professionals based in Boston’s Seaport District. We foster an open and collaborative environment, and provide ongoing mentorship, support, and potential for career advancement to all of our team members.

To date, MMV has deployed almost $200M of venture capital investments into a broad portfolio of startup companies and early-stage seed venture capital funds. We continually analyze the quarterly and financial performance statements from over 30 discrete investment entities, and our assessment of the fair market value (FMV) valuations of our investment positions are summarized into a quarterly portfolio report for our sole limited partner, MassMutual.

To help us manage this growing portfolio valuation and fund administration responsibility, we are hiring a Venture Capital Operations Analyst to join our team.

Our ideal candidate for an operations analyst is someone who will bring strong GAAP and cash accounting and financial modeling skills, will have a sincere interest in and curiosity about early-stage software startups while appreciating the unique challenges of valuing and investing in them, and who is interested in portfolio management and fund administration.

Objectives of this role

  • Track the performance of 30-50 portfolio companies both by using Carta administration software, and by directly communicating with the CFOs of those companies.
  • Updating MMV internal financial models with actual company performance data.
  • Manage the fund’s investments and distributions and record all transactions for the purpose of calculating fund ROI, IRR, TVPI, and DPI.
  • Calculating fair market value and book value of MMV’s portfolio companies, in accordance with our valuation guidelines.
  • Own the production of the quarterly MMV Portfolio Report to our limited partner, MassMutual.

Daily and monthly responsibilities

  • Communicate with MMV portfolio companies starting 20 days after quarter end to obtain high-level actuals and KPIs
  • Integrate full quarterly reporting data (obtained through Carta or directly) into existing MMV company-level financial models, and assess potential impact on MMV forecasted returns.
  • Recalculate FMV for each portfolio company, based upon financial performance or recent financing transactions.
  • Compile quarterly reporting document for presentation 60 days after quarter end to MMV Investment Committee.

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in relevant major (Finance, Accounting, Economics, etc.) or relevant applicable work experience
  • At least 1 year of experience in related field (investment banking, start-up experience, private equity research, FP&A, strategy, etc.)
  • Strong familiarity with accounting shown by being able to read and interpret a linked IS, BS, P&L
  • Excel financial modeling ability
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Professional demeanor. This individual is expected to communicate professionally with software company CFOs, MassMutual Treasury officers, and to represent MMV to the broader entrepreneurial and venture capital investment industry.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States, without requiring sponsorship, both now and in the future

Preferred qualifications

  • Prior entrepreneurial experience a plus, but not required
  • Experience with professional writing and presentation
