The Manager of SOX and Technical Accounting will be responsible for managing HubSpot’s accounting policies, procedures, and positions on a range of accounting topics, including the implementation and compliance with new accounting standards, as well as managing the HubSpot’s SOX compliance program. The technical accounting aspect of the job will be comprised largely of maintaining an inventory of position papers and working with the business and accounting team to ensure continued compliance with accounting policies and that changes to the business that impacts our accounting are addressed timely. The SOX aspect of the job will revolve around managing HubSpot’s SOX financial controls (there is a separate team that manages IT controls) and associated database where the accounting team documents the execution of monthly, quarterly and annual controls. This person will manage the scoping of procedures, the team’s monthly timeline, and documentation, review certain controls as appropriate, manage the internal and external auditors in the execution of their procedures, and document the evaluation of control deficiencies as necessary.

This person will initially be a team of one upon hire that manages several service providers and as HubSpot continues to grow in future years there will be opportunities to build out a team as needed. There will be significant interaction with the business and members of the accounting and FP&A teams.

In this role, you get to:

  • Develop financial policies in response to operational changes, technical accounting, and internal control requirements
  • Maintain and update as necessary the 10-15 technical accounting position memos that currently exist and document new position memos as needed
  • Work with various members of the accounting team to ensure that technical accounting requirements are being followed as part of the monthly close
  • Liaise with the SEC reporting manager in drafting portions of Forms 10-Q and 10-K disclosures and supporting schedules
  • Provide guidance on technical accounting regarding mergers and acquisitions and own the purchase price allocation and intangibles valuation process
  • Provide quarterly technical updates to the accounting and FP&A teams
  • Own the existing SOX process documentation and manage process owners for updating the documentation as necessary
  • Manage the internal and external auditors through their scoping, walkthrough, testing, and evaluation phases
  • Manage the accounting team’s monthly SOX execution process by working with the team to create a calendar, manage the progress to completion, and review certain controls as appropriate
  • Identify and evaluate control gaps and assist management in remediation
  • Monitor control deficiency remediation activities and ensure timely completion
  • Manage the SOC-1 evaluation process
  • Work with IT SOX team as necessary to ensure for ITGC controls that overlap with financial reporting controls
  • Prepare Audit Committee reporting for SOX status read-outs

We are looking for people who:

  • Have a Bachelor’s degree in accounting and have a CPA (these are both requirements)
  • Have approximately 4-7 years of public accounting experience, ideally in the technology industry (but not necessary)
  • Have experience in corporate accounting (ideal but not necessary)
  • Have a strong technical accounting background with a thorough knowledge of US GAAP, FASB codification and SEC reporting standards, as well as experience with technical research and preparation of accounting memos
  • Have experience in scoping SOX, performing and documenting walkthroughs, executing and documenting control testing, and evaluating control deficiencies
  • Have the ability to clearly and concisely document and effectively communicate complex accounting and reporting issues to finance and non-finance personnel (i.e. can communicate technical accounting matters in “plain English”)
  • Are outstanding at project management - able to establish and meet deadlines
  • Embrace technology and computer skills need to be second nature – proficient at Word and Excel
  • Are willing to “roll-up sleeves” and execute tasks
  • Have the ability to work well with others
  • Are self-directed and motivated
  • Embrace the challenges of maintaining technical accounting and SOX compliance in a very fast-paced environment
  • Have the ability to multi-task and manage multiple conflicting priorities
