The Life Underwriting and Digital Operations Technical Underwriting Consultant will support the Office of the Head Life Underwriter (OOHU) within Digital Operations Team by demonstrating accountability, agility, a dedication to being inclusive, a strong business acumen, and will show courage, even in the most difficult situations. ? Demonstrate a strong understanding of our underwriting policies, guidelines, practices and procedures and a willingness to champion changes to improve processes while maintaining mortality expectations.
? Have a strong working knowledge of reinsurance, the regulatory environment, compliance, claims reviews, product development and the maintenance of MassMutual's non-medical underwriting manual.
? Provide technical expertise for the department in all areas of medical and non-medical underwriting. This could be on individual cases or in monitoring trends at MassMutual and in the industry.
? Develop new and competitive underwriting guidelines with research, documentation, marketing and presentations.
? Think critically and problem solve using data to drive toward resolution.

Role Characteristics & Responsibilities
Reinsurance:
- Working with our actuaries on reinsurance treaties
- Working with reinsurers on complex individual cases.
- Meeting with reinsurers during audits and/or other visits.
- Represent the department for our reinsurance administration area which will include the process of maintaining control over proper limits and cessions with regard to individual treaties and cases.
- Auditing: This individual will be responsible for auditing higher face amount (jumbo) cases.
Compliance:
- Responsibility for making sure that we are compliant with all MassMutual as well as any state or Federal legal obligations in the underwriting area.
Claims reviews:
- Review large face amount and contestable claims.
- Provide recommendations based on those reviews.
- Point of contact for any other claims concerns or issues that may require underwriting expertise.
Product Development:
- Department contact on new product development and will need to communicate any and all new product initiatives/changes to the department.
Additional Support
- Provide support with other work items as assigned by Head Life Underwriter, i.e. guideline reviews, training and overall risk oversight and governance, working closely with Head Underwriter.
- Interpret large sets of data and effectively communicate data trends.
- Consults with stakeholders on core issues and watch list items openly share knowledge, information and feedback, collaborating to identify solutions and supporting team success.
- Lean into new challenges as they arise. Be comfortable with ambiguity.
- Handles projects with a sense of urgency based on business prioritization
- Distill information into concise summaries and tools for diverse internal audiences
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of relevant work experience in Life Insurance Underwriting
- Minimum $10+ million life approval limit without second sign
- Mastery knowledge of individual life insurance practices, underwriting standards and operations
- Confident communicator with strong written and verbal communication skills
- Be able to think strategically and influence others
- Ability to partner with key constituents to support strategic and tactical development
- A demonstrated track record of consistently meeting and/or exceeding performance expectations
- Intrapreneur mindset ? you drive your business forward with latitude for independent decision making
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and data visualization tools (ex? Tableau)?

Bachelors Degree
Industry designations/education (FALU, FLMI, CLU) preferred
