Investment Tax Accountant
The Opportunity
As an Investment Tax Accountant in the Investment Tax Unit, you will have an opportunity to join an engaged team of professionals who work to reduce the Company’s exposure to tax risks, participate in a variety of investment transactions, support M&A activity, provide high-quality tax advice, engage in transformative process and digitization enhancements, and satisfy tax accounting, reporting, and compliance requirements for the Company’s domestic life insurance companies and its non-insurance subsidiaries.
The Team
The Investment Tax Accountant will report to the Head of Investment Taxes, a part of the Corporate Tax Department within Corporate Controllers. The team is responsible for tax financial reporting, compliance, audits, transaction advisory, and planning and analysis for MassMutual’s Statutory general investment accounts and GAAP subsidiary investment assets.
The Impact:
- Prepare and review Statutory-to-tax income tax adjustments for investments, including securities, partnerships, real estate, mortgage loans, and derivatives
- Prepare and review Federal tax compliance, including tax adjustments, tax character, information reporting forms, statements and elections, and basis analysis.
- Provide tax support for Statutory and GAAP financial audits.
- Prepare responses to IRS audit requests.
- Compute and process changes to tax adjustments included in originally filed tax returns.
- Provide tax advice, including for complex issues, rooted in an understanding of the business transactions and objectives.
- Assist with implementing tax planning strategies and M&A transactions.
- Monitor legislation and regulatory developments and model impacts of legislative proposals.
- Build collaborative business relationships within Tax and across Company work groups.
- Drive data centric, digitized continuous improvements and efficiencies, including beyond own scope of responsibility.
The Minimum Qualifications
- 8+ years of overall tax experience, including at least 3 years related to investments.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting/Finance.
- Working knowledge of tax relevant tools and technology, including tax compliance software, GL systems and tax research software.
- Well-developed analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Adaptive and resilient in navigating a diverse workload, changing business priorities, and transformational improvement initiatives.
The Ideal Qualifications
- CPA or post-graduate degree in Tax/Accounting/Finance/Computers.
- Experience with systems/software for investments.
- Experience with Statutory accounting, including SSAP 101.
