Investment Risk Consultant (Hybrid)
The Opportunity
As an Investment Risk Consultant within the Capital & Investment Risk Management team, you will be assisting with identifying and managing the financial risks arising from MassMutual's investment portfolios. The ideal candidate will employ investment and risk knowledge to create analysis that drives decisions on financial risks taken by the firm. This position requires quantitative, analytical and innovative acumen to help the team identify emerging risks to business objectives and assist the 1st-line functions in decisions and actions for managing risks, including the execution of risk mitigation strategies.
You will join a diverse team to enhance the organization's investment risk management capabilities, by enhancing existing tools as well as designing and developing new tools and frameworks to provide required insights to monitor and manage these risks.
Reporting to the Head of Portfolio Risk Management, you will work with the capital risk, credit risk and asset analytics teams within ERM as well as the senior management and leaders and risk owners across all lines of business, actuarial, ALM, finance and investment teams . This is an excellent opportunity to collaborate with the portfolio managers and other 1st-line teams and have direct impacts on the risk taking and management in the investment portfolios.
The Team
The Capital & Investment Risk Management team delivers insights and influences decisions regarding MassMutual's investment risk taking and use of capital, in order to protect MassMutual's financial strength and enable it to achieve its strategy. It is responsible for the identification, measurement and analysis of MassMutual's market, credit, liquidity and capital risks. The team recommends risk management strategies and equips senior leadership with information they need to take advantage of opportunities and mitigate risks. Members of the team bring expertise and experience across a range of risk measurement and management disciplines.
Main Responsibilities
• Work with 1st-line functions in the identification, assessment and management of market risks
• Support or lead enhancements to the liquidity risk management framework and implementation of the framework
• Provide risk insights in asset allocations; participate in risk hedging discussions and decisions
• Lead or participate in analysis and management of emerging risks, e.g., climate risk
• Utilize the stress testing and risk appetite results to address business questions and support strategic decision making related to risk, capital, asset allocations and economic value
• Support the discussion and facilitate the execution of agreed upon portfolio risk mitigations
• Evaluate risk/return considerations and articulate acceptable boundaries consistent with the overall risk limit framework and risk appetite for both in-force and new product related initiatives
• Develop risk reporting to inform decisions by the Board of Directors, senior management and risk committees on risk management activities and the status of key financial risks
• Make recommendations related to risk treatment based on analysis of costs, benefits and expected value, and drive changes to achieve expected results
• Develop and analyze key risk indicators and risk quantification results and work with lines of business to continuously improve the process for identifying, assessing, monitoring and enhancing risk indicators and metrics
• Participate in cross-functional groups to help mature the risk management framework, and ensure incorporation of financial risk management in the development of new processes and products
• Design and lead training and education of those charged with managing financial risk, and to create risk awareness education for middle management and front-line employees
Teamwork
• Build solid relationships with the risk owners/ first line of defense, and have the ability to influence these interested parties to improve their risk management as needed
• Work closely and collaboratively with people across MassMutual to help complete projects
• Facilitate consistency of adoption of financial risk practices across the enterprise business units and subsidiaries
• Lead continuous process improvements
The Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in finance, business, economics or another quantitative discipline
• 5 years of capital markets experience
• Solid knowledge of various types of fixed income assets
• Direct experience with the insurance and annuity business
• Deep understanding of economic, statutory and GAAP regimes
• Highly effective critical thinking and abstract reasoning acumen that can apply information from disparate sources to form a cohesive analysis. Ability to identify the key financial risks to business objectives and potential risk mitigation alternatives for management action
• Ability to communicate in clear and concise language both verbally and in writing, and comfort in presenting information to all levels of the organization
• Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work with others and lead risk-related discussions
The Ideal Qualifications
• Advanced degree in finance, business, economics or another quantitative discipline
• 7+ years of capital markets experience with CFA, FRM, CAIA, FSA, ASA, or similar financial designations, preferably in investment management or investment risk management
• Experience with climate risk in an investment portfolio is a strong plus
• Derivative and hedging experience
• Experience leading and driving solutions involving multiple layers of management
• Comfort with ambiguity and complexity and the acumen to manage it; ability to explore multiple permutations and potential solutions to a problem
• Strong leadership skills; willingness to take on lead role in complex and ambiguous situations involving activities not directly associated with well-defined financial risk responsibilities
• Strong matrix management skills; ability to manage multiple projects across the enterprise
