This position is a key role in the Reinsurance Administration and Accounting team responsible for the reinsurance reporting and accounting for complex reinsurance arrangements.

The Team

The position will work closely with other teams within the Controllers department – Insurance Accounting and Investment Accounting – and other departments within Finance. This position resides within the Controllers Organization of Corporate Finance which seeks to be best in class financial stewards for MassMutual. This is an opportunity for a highly-engaged individual seeking a dynamic and agile team environment to collaborate across groups seeking solid execution and improving outcomes. This is an opportunity for an experienced finance professional focused on the development and execution of process improvement, meaningful analysis and control execution for the reinsurance accounting and reporting activities.

 

The Impact

  • Provides reliable financial information to reinsurers, business units or other departments, anticipating the financial statement impacts
  • Making recommendations to ensure appropriate processes are implemented and maintained
  • Develop clear and comprehensive reinsurance reporting on US GAAP and statutory basis
  • Understands how data flows through the financial systems to the accounting function, planning appropriately for changes and prioritizing and implementing enhancements
  • Maintain internal controls and consistently improve upon a strong control environment within the reinsurance accounting activities
  • Collaborate and partner with other MassMutual business units and corporate functions to ensure the accurate, timely and efficient submission of data and analysis required to reinsurers and to meet reporting requirements – Communication and Self-Awareness
  • Collaborate with accounting policy and other areas within the Controllers Organization on the evaluation of US GAAP and statutory reporting impacts to the company on new and existing reinsurance treaties
  • Contribute to our successful transition to new technology solutions to automate and improve our processes
  • Analyze reinsurance profitability trends and results, and contribute to commentary which enables leaders to quickly understand how reinsurance treaty performance is impacting financial results
  • Identify and implement process improvements that increase the business value and efficiency of the team

 

 

The Minimum Qualifications

  • BS in accounting, finance, statistics, mathematics, or related field
  • 7 years of experience working in a large insurance organization
  • Experience using insurance data and information to analyze and communicate the implications on financial results
  • Experience working with key financial concepts and financial statements
  • Significant knowledge and experience of US GAAP and statutory accounting
  • Experience running database quires
  • Continuous improvement mindset
  • Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships across cross-functional groups
  • Competencies – accountability, agility, business acumen, communication, courage, development, inclusion, leading others, resilience and self-awareness

 

The Ideal Qualifications

  • Certified Public Accountant preferred
  • Ability to support complex reinsurance agreements end-to-end, including treaty interpretation, developing execution and ongoing accounting data sourcing and validation, creation of processes and controls to enable accounting and settlements, financial reporting, and customer support for the reinsurers.
  • Ability to proactively partner across the organization on cross-functional projects or to resolve issues
  • Experience with SAP, including data extraction
  • Ability to proactively take ownership of projects and drive them through to completion
  • Experience working in a Finance transformational setting
  • In-depth knowledge of US GAAP and Statutory accounting
  • Ability to perform independent research and prepare analyses of the impact of accounting requirements
  • Experience with best-in-class control execution/documentation
