Who we’re looking for:

Do you have experience leading teams and writing clean code for consumer use? Are you an ambitious technical leader with broad and deep experience in at least one of our software specialties, with an unwavering dedication to consumers in a 24x7 operating environment? Starry is seeking a Vice President of Software Development who craves a wide range of challenges and who isn’t afraid to dig into specifics. You will grow our talented team that designs, builds and maintains all software for the company’s vertically integrated technology stack, including networking software, mobile apps, cloud, data science & commerce. We provide gigabit capable internet service to consumers using wireless and optical networking equipment and software. We take pride in offering a Happy Interneting experience by developing all elements of Internet service delivery, including access points and proprietary millimeter-wave 5G fixed broadband.

Our software teams enable commercial success from sales prospecting to a delivery robust against failures. Dramatic growth means that you will need to be a practical visionary, a skilled coach of coaches, and an upbeat advocate of fulfillment and teamwork. To gain the respect of the team, you should be an accomplished authority in one software discipline and have the intellectual flexibility to lead adjacent disciplines.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead multiple software teams for development, maintenance and operation of Starry’s complex software systems
  • Encourage our individual teams to continuously improve, and advance from design through operation for timely delivery
  • Debug operational issues in new product and service introduction, taking services from birth to end of life
  • Mentor & coach high performing individual contributors and technical leaders including metamorphosis as the business needs
  • Develop and advance Starry’s latest generation tools
  • Identify skills and resource gaps, and close up those gaps, locally or offshore by mentoring and coaching highly effective individuals and teams as needed to keep up with the needs of an explosively growing business

Qualifications:

  • MS or Ph. D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics or Mathematics or a related engineering technical field, or equivalent work experience
  • Complete knowledge of at least one modern language; including one of C++, Rust, or Node/Javascript, in a widely deployed production environment
  • Data Networking knowledge and experience for wired and wireless (WiFi) networking especially in the MAC, Network, and transport layers
  • 10+ years of expertise driving Linux performance
  • You have doubled or tripled a high performing small organization into a much larger, and even higher performing organization
  • You speak and write well in English, with extra credit for Ukrainian or Mandarin
  • You have expertly led a team with 75 or more active developers over multiple product cycles and at least one successful offshore project cycle
  • High emotional intelligence

  • Submissions and acceptances of code in a large open source project
  • Ambitious activities in your career, such as having run your own 24x7 service business
  • Experience with a data networking service company
  • Love of Git
  • Actively participate in ACM, IEEE or other professional societies
