System Safety Engineer

Job Qualifications:

Systems Safety Engineering within the Systems Engineering Group are responsible for the execution of systems safety assessments for our programs. Core responsibilities include contributing to the design and development of aerospace vehicles and processes from a safety perspective, documenting various system safety analyses, building and maintaining Aurora’s Hazard Database, and assisting with safety-related requirements management. Safety Engineers are expected to lead those activities, taking ownership of the development of artifacts such as Functional Hazard Assessments, FMEAs/FMECAs, PSSAs, SSAs, and other items throughout a program’s lifetime, working closely with other discipline experts to populate those items and drive design changes.

 

This position will enable a candidate to develop experience in a variety of aerospace disciplines, while using their engineering education as a building block for learning system safety engineering skills. Candidates must have a strong engineering education background, a desire to work in aviation and aerospace safety, and excellent writing skills.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Apply system safety assessment techniques in the design of safety-critical products.

  • Prepare system safety program plans, conduct system safety assessments in support of design organizations, provide safety surveillance for flight test operations.

  • Perform software hazard analyses, including review of software requirements, safety-critical software systems, change requests, and peer reviews.

  • Perform mishap investigations, identify cause and recommend/initiate corrective actions.

  • Maintain and execute the program software safety and essential function plans.

  • Writes, reviews and approves safety artifacts in accordance with SAE ARP4754A, SAE ARP4761 or MIL-STD-882E including Fault Tree Analyses (FTA), Functional Hazard Analyses (FHA), Preliminary System Safety Assessments (PSSA) and System Safety Assessments (SSA).

  • Ability to effectively interact and build trust with team members from many different backgrounds, including engineering management, engineering teams, program management.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline from an accredited university and 5+ years of system safety engineering experience focusing on

    • Defect analysis & troubleshooting of aircraft systems.

    • Service engineering experience in aircraft systems at an airline, aircraft original equipment manufacturer (OEM), or component OEM.

    • Using technical knowledge databases including IBM Rational DOORS.

    • Root cause analysis (RCA) and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) methods, Failure Modes and Effects Criticality Analysis (FMECA) practices, and corrective action development.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.

  • Familiar with industry standards for hardware and software certification, including but not limited to FAA Type Certification under 14 CFR Parts 21, 23, 25 27, or 29; RTCA DO-178C; RTCA DO-254; SAE ARP4754A and SAE ARP4761.

  • Expertise in MIL-STD-882E (DoD System Safety Standard Practice) and SAE ARP4761 (Guidelines and Methods for Conducting the Safety Assessment Process on Civil Airborne Systems and Equipment).

  • Expertise in MIL-HDBK-516C (DoD Airworthiness Certification Criteria) and RTCA DO-178C (Software Considerations in Airborne Systems and Equipment Certification).

  • Must be a US citizen or authorized permanent resident.

 

Physical Requirements:

Occasionally required (up to 25%) to travel for multi-site collaboration, reviews, customer meetings, etc.

 

Shift Requirements:

Occasionally required to work non-business hours to support experiments and travel to customer sites
