Software Engineer, Campaign Empowerment
WHO WE ARE:
At ActBlue we build and maintain a powerful online fundraising platform for Democratic campaigns, progressive organizations, and nonprofits working to create a better future. We put power in the hands of small-dollar donors by making it easier for grassroots supporters to make their voices heard and by helping thousands of groups — from presidential candidates to environmental organizations — build people-powered movements.
If you’ve ever given online to a Democratic candidate or progressive organization, chances are you’ve used our software. We’re a tech nonprofit organization, and our team has a big impact on the future of our country. Each and every one of us, from the political activists to the tech innovators to the customer service pros, is fully committed to our mission.
THE OPPORTUNITY:
On the Campaign Empowerment team, our mission is to build reliable, frictionless, and insightful solutions that enable progressive advocates to engage their communities sustainably and ethically. We’re a highly motivated and collaborative group of engineers, designers, and product folks who value how software can drive change.
We’re looking for a growth-oriented entry-level software engineer to join our team!
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
- Work with other engineers to build features that empowers Democratic campaigns, progressive organizations, and nonprofits to connect with their donors
- Collaborate closely with product and design to find creative solutions for our users’ needs
- Contribute broadly across our tech stack using technologies like Ruby on Rails, React, and PostgreSQL
- Receive mentorship and space to learn about software best practices and the political fundraising space
- Advocate for software quality whether it’s improving developer experience, writing documentation, or writing tests for automation
- Work within our team to build a collaborative and inclusive team culture
WHAT YOU BRING:
- An eagerness to learn and grow your skills as an engineer
- Strong communication and collaboration skills that let you work effectively within a distributed team
- A passion for software and ActBlue’s mission to build people-powered movements
- A highly adaptable mindset for approaching new codebases and new challenges
- 1-2 years of education or work experience in software, STEM, or a related field
- A solid foundation in software fundamentals with proficiency in at least one programming language
- The ability to turn your ideas into code as demonstrated by past work or software experiences
OUR ENGINEERING VALUES:
- We believe that ideas are more important than technologies.
- We understand that the tools we build have real-world consequences for millions of people and take that responsibility seriously.
- We know that code isn’t just a set of instructions for machines, but communication with other humans; style, clarity, and respect are important.
- We believe that an ability to balance paying off technical debt and rapidly completing a project contributes to the health of the codebase, engineering team, and organization.
- We believe that being correct isn’t enough; respect for your colleagues and users is fundamental.
