Chewy is looking for a Java Software Engineer to join our Pet Heath Tech Team. The ideal candidate is more than just your average development engineer. Location options are: Minneapolis, MN, or Boston, MA.

Chewy’s Warehouse Management System team is focused on building, scaling, and maintaining the software necessary to run our Pet Health Pharmacy Fulfillment Centers (FCs).   As member of the Chewy team you will deliver functionality in the Pet Health business that enables our FCs to provide world class customer experience, such as the ability to ship an order within an hour of it being placed. 

Chewy is hiring a Software Engineer - Java for our Pharmacy Fulfilment team. As a Software Engineer you will be in charge of evaluating new technologies, designing, developing impactful software capabilities to enhance or create new functionality needed to grow Chewy.  You will have the opportunity to be part of a high performing engineering team with sound knowledge of business processes that include supply chain, and fulfillment.

What You'll Do:

While working within an Agile environment, you will work with Developers, Product Managers and Business stakeholders to implement effective WMS

  • Document code customization in compliance with established standards and practices
  • Manage deadlines by balancing deliverables from multiple projects, production support, and system administration tasks
  • Act in the capacity of a software engineer to actively participate in the definition, design, development, testing and implementation of software functionality using the Agile methodology.
  • Create or modify complex programs, modules, routines, scripts and data objects from a detailed design where efficiency, performance and reliability are critical.
  • Work with and advise both business and technology teams (internal and external) on how best to implement desired features and enhancements.
  • Ensure that technical solutions follow best practices, are reliable, are easily maintainable and are scalable under sustained load.
  • Participate in design and code reviews.
  • Collaborate to identify, isolate and resolve malfunctions related to software.
  • Drive innovation through rapid prototyping and iterative development.
  • Conduct design and code reviews and raise the bar on engineering rigor and standard.
  • Debug production issues across services and tech stack.
  • Continuously measure and optimize the performance, effectiveness, and uptime of backend services.
  • You will participate in setting guidelines for evolving development practices.
  • Resolve issues impacting our business teams
  • Provide training to Business Analysts/Subject Matter Experts as needed
  • Suggest / Define test cases for solutions, and assist QA Analysts as needed

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (MIS or CS preferred) or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum 3 years working proficiency in Computer Science fundamentals - design, problem solving, and complexity analysis, object-oriented design, data structures, System Design.
  • 3+ years of experience in SQL and developing applications with relational/noSQL database technologies (PostGres/Redis preferred).
  • 3+ years of experience working with REST based web services (HTTP, REST).
  • Strong analytical abilities and a strong intellectual curiosity.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong time management and organization skills.
  • Must be team oriented and have a customer service mindset.
  • Self-driven, able to work independently or within a team setting.
  • Results oriented and adaptable.
  • Strong communication and analytical skills with the ability to deal with ambiguity in a rapidly changing business environment and deliver quality results on time
  • Effective troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to travel on occasion

Bonus:

  • Experience with relational databases such as MS SQL / Oracle / PostgreSQL
  • Experience with Atlassian suite of tools (JIRA, Confluence, HipChat)
  • Previous experience with HighJump or any Warehouse Management System
  • Development experience with enterprise applications
  • Previous experience with T-SQL experience
  • Exposure to .NET Web Services, and Message Queueing experience
  • Experience in e-commerce/ retail.
  • Experience with Scrum, XP or other agile methodologies a plus.
  • Good communication skills with both technical and business audiences.
  • Experience working directly with non-IT business partners.
