Desktop Metal is revolutionizing all aspects of metal 3D printing. We are presently seeking a talented and self-motivated Sr. Mechanical Engineer to join our Studio System Engineering team. The Studio System consists of three different hardware units, Printer, Debinder, and Sintering Furnace. Together these three units utilize a robust build process that can create complex metal parts, at a price attainable by any design and manufacturing team. The ideal candidate will have experience architecting and developing novel electro-mechanical systems from concept to production.
Position Responsibilities:
- Work closely with program management and regulatory teams to create the next generation of metal 3D printing systems
- Create product requirements and qualify designs against specifications
- Design system components, including detailed drawings for manufacturing using best practices and GD&T
- Lead research and development of sub-systems and component selection
- Maintain 3D CAD models and documentation of system architecture and components
- Work with an interdisciplinary team to perform detailed design and analysis
- Apply a strong analytical approach to the design process, including mechanics, thermals and tolerance analysis.
- Lead FMEA and design reviews
- Maintain a high level of communications with cross-functional teams and partners
Basic Qualifications:
- Experience in bringing multiple products through the full design cycle; from brainstorming through product development and transitioning to production
- Thorough understanding and use of technical principles, theories, and concepts in mechanical and systems engineering
- Ability to identify, design and validate cost saving opportunities against original design intent
- Broad exposure to mechanical design and development practices
- Working knowledge of manufacturing techniques such as injection molding, sheet metal fabrication, welding, machining and 3D printing
- Experience designing and documenting machined, sheet metal, and cast parts for prototype and mass production
- Experience designing and operating high vacuum systems
- Understanding of fluid systems and able to analyze and design process cooling systems
- Experience working with various suppliers to integrate components into system design
- Ability to resolve complex issues in creative, efficient, and effective ways
- Ability to apply customer and company-wide perspective to detailed technical decisions
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- BS/MS Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
Preferred Experiences:
- Solidworks
- Designing for high temperature technologies and applications
- Designing for medium to high vacuum applications
