Senior Materials Print Engineer - Metal at Markforged
As a Materials Print Engineer, you will be at the forefront of expanding the capabilities of Markforged 3D printing systems. You will continuously improve our existing FFF material set and bring new FFF materials through development, qualification and out into the market. To do this you will use your materials know-how to look at structure-process-property relationships, develop materials printing profiles, run varieties of print testings, and modify materials or other print system components to optimize result. Perhaps you will end up tweaking software algorithms, changing the rheology of the filaments or modifying the sintering cycles to get the perfect parts. You will work directly with a team of materials scientists, print engineers, hardware engineers and software engineers and contribute to a collaborative and productive work environment. This role will be mainly focused on the metal side of our business.
What will you own?- Lead the design and improvement of metal printing processes to achieve desirable performances and meet demanding application needs
- Lead the design of print test suites, test methods and statistically meaningful analysis methods for metal printing materials
- Lead new materials development efforts including formulation, processing, print system integration, and sintering.
- Perform experiments and use results to inform and develop improvements in materials, software, and/or hardware for better properties, robustness, and reliability
- Make hypotheses and test them in multiple ways
- Root cause 3D printing phenomena
- Maintain and further develop materials printing know-hows for the company
- Effectively document, summarize and present findings
- Comply with safety and protective equipment regulations
Important Note:
Although we list out what we generally look for, we are very likely missing other attributes and skills that you have that could make you a great fit, but are not currently listed. Research has shown this especially applies to women and other marginalized groups, who tend to apply if they check 100% of every box, versus men who apply if they hit roughly 60%. The point we’re getting at, it doesn’t hurt to take a chance and apply!
What you have:- A Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, or related; advanced degree preferred
- 2+ years industrial experience and 5+ years combined experience in a metallurgical or metal additive manufacturing position, preferably covering at least two of the following topics: metal forming, sintering, heat treatment, and characterizations
- Experience matching part functional requirements to optimal materials and manufacturing processes selection; strong understanding on the strengths and limitations of common metal forming processes
- Embrace the part is the product philosophy and be passionate at driving the continuously improvement of part quality
- Strong sense of ownership and strong attention to detail
- Creative problem solver with a can-do attitude
- Other desirable but not required qualifications:
- Familiarity with MIM and/or powder metallurgy
- Hands-on experience tuning 3D printing or other similar processes
- Familiarity with CAD and coding (python, javascript, or C)
