Senior Furnace Engineer

Desktop Metal is revolutionizing all aspects of metal 3D printing. We are presently seeking a talented and self-motivated Sr. Furnace Engineer to join our Studio System Engineering team. The Studio System consists of three different hardware units, Printer, Debinder, and Sintering Furnace. Together these three units utilize a robust build process that can create complex metal parts, at a price attainable by any design and manufacturing team. The ideal candidate will have experience designing and operating sintering furnaces.
Position Responsibilities:
- Work closely with program management and regulatory teams to create the next generation of office friendly sintering furnaces
- Create product requirements and qualify designs against specifications
- Lead research and development of sub-systems and develop design criteria for product design
- Work with an interdisciplinary team to perform detailed design and analysis
- Apply a strong analytical approach to the research and design process, including mechanics, fluids and thermals
- Lead FMEA and design reviews
- Maintain a high level of communications with cross-functional teams and partners
- Work closely with facilities team to design and maintain furnace rooms including but not limited to hydrogen furnace research
Basic Qualifications:
- Thorough knowledge of partial pressure vacuum furnaces and the associated technologies
- Understand and use technical principles, theories, and concepts in mechanical and systems engineering
- Working knowledge of furnace insulation and heating element technology
- Ability to identify, design and validate cost saving opportunities against original design intent
- Experience designing and operating high vacuum systems
- Understanding of fluid systems and able to analyze and design process cooling systems
- Experience working with various high temperature insulation technologies
- Ability to resolve complex issues in creative, efficient, and effective ways
- Ability to apply customer and company-wide perspective to detailed technical decisions
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- 10+ years in an engineering design role
- BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or equivalent
Preferred Experiences:
- Solidworks
- Working with or preferably designing hydrogen furnaces
- Designing for high temperature technologies and applications
- Designing for medium to high vacuum applications
- Knowledge of gas conversion and management systems
- Basic electrical design and diagnostics
