About The Opportunity

We’re all about connecting hungry diners with our network of over 300,000 restaurants nationwide. Innovative technology, user-friendly platforms and streamlined delivery capabilities set us apart and make us an industry leader in the world of online food ordering. When you join our team, you become part of a community that works together to innovate, solve problems, grow, work hard and have a ton of fun in the process!

The Branded Channel Technology team within Grubhub focuses on providing the set of technologies used by restaurant partners to power their own branded online ordering experiences. Developers on the team work primarily in Ruby on Rails and Java in order to build and maintain the core set of systems that power this restaurant ecosystem. We are a team of smart, highly motivated engineers that place a high value on writing well-crafted, thoroughly tested, and maintainable code.

We’re looking for a Principal Engineer that can help us to maintain and evolve our suite of Ruby on Rails applications as we support a number of critical business functions within Grubhub including the branded channel ordering pipeline, infrastructure for transmission of orders to point-of-sale systems, and a robust loyalty and rewards framework. The problems that we are currently facing that you’ll help address include evolving our architecture to handle both increased and brand new usage patterns, ensuring the reliability and scalability of our services, and spearheading the re-architecture of certain services or interaction patterns. Big picture thinking will be important, but also an ability to roll up your sleeves and get into the technical details.

The Impact You Will Make

  • Work with technology teams across the business to design solutions that enhance the reliability and scalability of our systems.
  • Interact with product and operations leaders to understand the needs of our business and our customers and provide solutions for those needs.
  • Help us to determine and execute upon our long-term architectural vision for the Ruby systems within the broader company’s technology ecosystem.
  • Help us to mature and scale a suite of Ruby on Rails applications by identifying and addressing key engineering and operational excellence gaps.
  • Design extensible software architectures that allow us to be agile and react to changes quickly.
  • Help to extend the effectiveness of the current team through coaching and mentoring.
  • Contribute to the evaluation and adoption of new architecture patterns, development best practices, and technologies within the team and broader organization.
  • Work with our Site Reliability Engineering team to drive operational excellence.

What You Bring to the Table

  • Ability to architect, build, and maintain systems supporting complex business processes. Experience architecting, designing, and developing testable, fault-tolerant, and performant software.
  • Experience in scaling web applications (ideally Ruby on Rails) and implementing architectural patterns to enable high growth.
  • Practical experience with the tradeoffs between microservice and monolith architecture and what problems each is best suited to.
  • Ability to weigh competing priorities, manage trade-offs, evaluate new opportunities with stakeholders, and build consensus while maintaining a clear focus on an end goal.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders at all levels throughout the company.
  • Familiarity and comfort with data, including the ability to use data to analyze and monitor product health.
  • Ruby, Python, Java, or a similar modern object-oriented language.
  • Familiar with Agile methodologies.
  • Familiar with relational and non-relational database technologies.
  • Experience with Heroku and AWS.
  • Expertise in automated testing.
  • A degree in Science, Programming or Engineering related field and/or 10+ years experience building highly-scalable applications (with a focus upon e-commerce preferred).
  • Direct experience with marketplaces, high throughput application, and/or event-driven architectures.
