The Opportunity:athenahealth is deep in the middle of the largest market expansion in the company's history; moving from just focusing on physician offices to supporting entire hospitals and health systems as our clients. athenaCollector serves both these hospitals and ambulatory clients as their billing engine, ensuring that they get paid and stay in business in an increasingly challenging business environment. This position falls within our Claim Processing zone, where we work daily to ensure all charges are captured correctly, ensure billing workflows are simple and quick, and fight insurers on behalf of our clients. athenaCollector is our flagship product responsible for 80% of our revenue and the Claim Processing zone is our front lines in the fight in getting doctor’s paid. The Member Technical Staff for the Claim Processing zone team will imbed with one of our scrum teams working to create and improve our billing workflows. Your success will depend on your skill at understanding our clients' workflows and business needs, as well as our technology needs to build scalable performant solutions. This is a challenging, full-stack role in a key area of athena's strategic expansion that will require you to learn with us as we work with a rapidly growing slate of hospital clients and a growing set of billing requirements.
Position Summary:

At the Member of Technical Staff level, we're interested in folks who combine the essentials of raw talent and a burning desire to succeed with a demonstrated history of working through complex business issues. Individually contributing MTS work to develop extensions to the system architecture, work through design questions in close cooperation with business stakeholders, and write substantial amounts of code. MTS are expected to be valued team members that execute independently while taking ownership of projects within their teams.
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
Technical Execution

  • Produce accurate, unambiguous technical design specifications to the appropriate detail
  • Critique technical documentation as needed
  • Deliver customer value in the form of high quality software components and services in adherence with RPR policies on Security, performance, longevity and Integration testing
  • Proactively identify and proposes new, alternative technology in order to create scalable implementations and achieve results
  • Accurately estimate the size of development tasks in story points; challenge other during estimation
  • Provide high level T-shirt sizing for the work required to build smaller software components and services
  • Understand and follow coding conventions, architectures, and best practices; hold other members of the team accountable for doing so
  • Write, debug, and deploy code to production; deliver timely fixes
  • Participates in team member interview process as needed; influences final hiring decisions
  • Scale systems to meet business demand
  • Deploy systems to meet availability targets (HA/DR)
  • Adhere to DOD (story definition of done) as part of the sprint, including unit tests, functional testing, code reviews, no regressions, bug fixes, documentation and adhere to best coding practices
  • Perform peer code reviews in order to ensure quality standards


Contributions to the Team

  • Act as the subject matter expert for area of assignment
  • Participate on scrum teams following practices outlined by team
  • Take ownership of what the team builds after the release; consider customer adoption as success criteria
  • Contribute to agile ceremonies to improve team performance
  • Volunteer for work in the backlog and commit to quality delivery; Coordinate efforts across the team to ensure completion and effectiveness
  • Participate and contribute to scrum meetings i.e. daily stand-up, sprint planning, readouts and retrospectives
  • Drive self-organization; help determine how the team functions in collaboration with your peers
  • Serve as Scrum Master as assigned and ensure high team effectiveness and efficiency


Mentorship of Others

  • Advise and train members of the team to maximize overall productivity and effectiveness of the team


Cross functional Coordination and Communication

  • Work collaboratively across the Technology and Product organizations to ensure alignment towards business goals
  • Collaborate with members of product and UX teams to design solutions
  • Builds strong relationships with cross-functional team members and business stakeholders
  • Share business and technical learnings with the broader engineering and product organization, while adapting approach for different audiences


Education, Experience, & Skills Required:

  • 2-4 years of experience in an engineering role
  • Experience in an Agile environment preferred
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent, Computer Science preferred
  • Significant software engineering skills and computer science experience
  • Knowledge of modern programming languages such as: C#, C++, Perl, Java, Python, and javascript/jQuery
  • Knowledge of Unix/Linux, Big Data, SQL, NOSQL, and various other technologies
  • Experience with object oriented programing, relational database technologies, distributed computing tech (Hadoop, spark), RESTful API, WebUI (HTML 5) and Modern JS frameworks
  • Experience with iOS and Android environments
