As a Manufacturing Engineer on the Operations Engineering team, you will be responsible for driving Design for Manufacture (DFM) & Design for Assembly (DFA) initiatives during the development and launch phases for NPI projects. This role is critical to ensure Markforged devices are designed for high volume manufacturing. You will report to the Operations Engineering Lead, building a strong relationship with contract manufacturers (CM) and critical sub-tier suppliers while working closely with the operations teams and manufacturing, hardware, electrical and software engineers. The ideal candidate exhibits exceptional communication, project management skills and solid DFM/DFA experience. This individual must be self-motivated, able to handle multiple project assignments and be willing to learn and adapt within a fast-paced engineering organization.

What will you own?
  • Drive Design for Manufacture (DFM) & Design for Assembly (DFA) initiatives with cross-functional teams through the NPI phase gate process
  • Participate in design reviews & prototype builds to provide DFM/DFA reviews of product, assembly, testing and tooling designs to engineering team during development phase
  • Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to define manufacturing and assembly requirements
  • Manage and drive DFM/DFA activities to closure during development cycles
  • Participate in supplier & contract manufacturer (CM) selection/qualification
  • Collaborate with external partners (suppliers, CMs, contractors) on DFM/DFA activities and build out of test plans
  • Support process qualifications and capability studies (custom test fixture validation, Gage R&R, DOEs, FMEA’s, etc)
  • Support product ramp and transition to sustaining phases
  • Drive dual sourcing initiatives and supplier launch initiatives during development phase
  • Drive accountability with internal and external stakeholders on project deliverables
  • Participate in the development, generation, and validation of calibration and system level testing of hardware and software

What you have:

  • Tool design and/or toolmaking experience for production stamping, plastic injection mold, and/or die cast tooling
  • Previous experience in DFM/DFA required
  • Proven track record of taking products from NPI to high volume production
  • 3-5 years in product-based electromechanical assemblies in a hands-on, fast paced, engineering and manufacturing environment
  • Passion for manufacturing, automation and continuous improvement
  • Ability to independently lead cross-functional projects to completion
  • Proficient in Solidworks, 3D modelling of complex assemblies, detailed engineering drawings and GD&T
  • Familiarity with developing testing methods for hardware/software integrated products
  • Sharp analytical and mechanical mindset with a desire to apply them toward real-world manufacturing problems
  • Experience with production best practices such as LEAN, Kaizen, 5S, and Six Sigma
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (Mechanical, Electro-Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering preferred)
  • Strong verbal and written English communication skills - can convey complex technical topics in simple terms across internal departments and external partners
  • Not afraid to challenge the status quo and regularly offers their own ideas
  • Comfortable with issue escalation when appropriate
  • Extremely motivated and organized individual who can be self-directed in both team-based and individual settings
  • Works well in a fast-paced dynamic  environment
  • Willingness to travel 30-40% both domestically and internationally
