WHO WE ARE:

ActBlue builds and maintains a powerful online fundraising platform for Democratic campaigns, progressive organizations, and nonprofits working to create a better future. We put power in the hands of small-dollar donors by making it easier for grassroots supporters to make their voices heard and by helping thousands of groups — from presidential candidates to environmental organizations —  build people-powered movements.

We’re a nonprofit organization, and our team has a big impact on the future of our country. Each and every one of us, from the political activists to the tech innovators to the customer service pros, is fully committed to our mission.

We are expanding our engineering leadership team. We’re looking for a DevOps Manager to support sound direction and ensure the integrity and smooth functioning of our infrastructure engineering and operations team. Our engineering and product organization is made up of 50+ people and growing. We’re organized into interdisciplinary teams of 3-7 people with clear areas of complementary focus.

Engineering teams are charged with operating autonomously while maintaining alignment with the organization’s objectives. In this role, you will support this charge by working with your team's Architect, engineers, and project manager, who are tasked with building and maintaining our automated, scalable and self-healing platform. You will also foster transparency and engagement, and ensure successful cross-team communication and collaboration.

In addition to cultivating an inclusive environment that brings out the best in your team holistically, you will be directly managing and mentoring the individuals on your team. You will champion, coach, and challenge individual team members in concert with supporting the growth of the whole team.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:

  • Providing guidance for up to 7 SRE and DB engineers of diverse backgrounds and skills
  • Supporting the professional development of your direct reports (supportive feedback, goal-setting, regular check-ins, etc)
  • Working with the architect, engineers, and project manager to formulate roadmaps
  • Driving essential and timely communication between teams
  • Ensuring the teams have the context and resources they need to achieve their goals
  • Help build comprehensive on-boarding program for team members to get new hires ready for on-call duties
  • Curating professional development opportunities to align team members career goals with organizational initiatives.
  • Collaborating with the rest of engineering leadership to continually cultivate a work environment where everyone on the team can thrive

WHAT YOU'LL BRING:

  • 3+ years of management experience with teams of 5+ ICs
  • A track record of success in inclusive management
  • A strong faculty for reliability engineering and database management and best practices. Experience with details of running a high volume SaaS or Ecommerce platform
  • Adept project-scoping, planning, and management
  • Motivation to see your teams and individuals on those teams succeed
  • A personal commitment to fostering psychologically safe environments for your teams
  • A moderate allergy to manual processes as we like to automate everything where at all feasible

OUR ENGINEERING VALUES:

  • We believe that ideas are more important than technologies.
  • We understand that the tools we build have real-world consequences for millions of people and take that responsibility seriously.
  • Security is at the center of everything we do. We are always on the lookout for ways to further harden our platform.
  • We know that code isn’t just a set of instructions for machines, but communication with other humans; style, elegance, and respect are important.
  • We believe that an ability to balance paying off technical debt and rapidly completing a project contributes to the health of the codebase, engineering team, and organization.
  • We believe that being correct isn’t enough; respect for your colleagues and users is fundamental.

An Insider's view of ActBlue

How would you describe the company’s work-life balance?

ActBlue has incredible work life balance! Unlimited PTO is a lifesaver. I organize outside of work for local elections, mutual aid, & direct action, and sometimes that happens during the workday. Having sufficient time to rest also helps me be more motivated & enjoy work. The culture treats PTO with respect & no one is guilted for taking time off.

Crystal

Data Engineer

What projects are you most excited about?

Our team is in the beginning stages of a Roles and Permissions overhaul for our Campaign and Non-Profit users. We will be adding the ability for these entities to grant varying access levels for different users. We hope this will allow for more users to be added to the platform, while keeping their data secure.

Nate

Senior Software Engineer

How has your career grown since starting at the company?

When I first started at ActBlue in 2019, I didn’t write any code. Thanks to the supportive, mentorship-focused approach within the organization, I was given the space to learn and grow my engineering skill set. I paired regularly with my peers, did coursework, and was empowered to take on projects outside of my comfort zone.

Alli

Senior Product Designer

How do you empower your team to be more creative?

Fostering creativity starts with trust. I think innovation comes when we give individuals the autonomy to solve problems, not just build prescribed solutions. Our team collaborates early and often, empowers individuals to understand the why instead of just the what, and encourages risk through a culture of learning through iteration.

Ani

Senior Engineering Manager

What are some things you learned at the company?

As a more "seasoned" member of ActBlue, I appreciate the company's commitment to Diversity and Inclusion. I learn something new almost every single day. Working here is helping me be a better person.

Martin

Engineering Manager, DevOps
