Wistia is looking for a Director of Platform Engineering to ensure that we're building a technical platform that enables our customers to do awesome things with video, and enables our engineering organization to solve the problems that get in their way.

As Director of Platform Engineering, you will be responsible for ensuring:

  • We understand and proactively manage the technical dependencies that customers have on our platform.
  • We optimize the cost of our hosted infrastructure, and appropriately model costs of new technical projects.
  • Your teams understand our overall business strategy and how they can have a maximal impact on it.
  • Your teams are driving their own roadmaps to improve agreed upon metrics and meet agreed upon goals.

We’re looking for someone with a track record of:

  • Excellence in hiring and managing teams.
  • High output relative to the size of the teams you’ve been a part of.
  • Debating difficult questions on their merits, and expressing opposing viewpoints in ways that their advocates agree with.
  • First principles thinking and creative problem solving.
  • Identifying mistakes or flawed assumptions behind a team’s plan, and proactively but courteously pointing them out.
  • Improving your team’s diversity and inclusivity, independent of whether you have formally made the hiring decisions.
  • Staying close enough to the work to understand and represent your team’s needs, strengths, and weaknesses.
  • Thinking in tradeoffs, and understanding the downsides of decisions you make before you make them.

You’ll fit in great on our engineering leadership team if you:

  • Enjoy enabling customers and learning quickly, even when it means making decisions amid uncertainty.
  • Care deeply about fostering an environment where people of all backgrounds and experiences can flourish.
  • Want to be part of a culture that demands openness and transparency, but also rewards it and bends over backward to make it safe and comfortable.
  • Are driven and goal-oriented, but not obsessed with quantifying all of your achievements.
  • Love to have fun at work, and understand that strong team and business performance are what make that possible.

You won't be a fit for this role if you:

  • Enjoy solving technical problems but aren’t highly motivated to solve customer problems.
  • Rely on formal authority to get groups to arrive at appropriate decisions.
  • Can't cite examples of recommendations you've made that go against common industry practices.

Your success looks like:
30 Days

  • Complete Wistia onboarding program.
  • Develop a holistic understanding of our business strategy, and how our business operates and why.
  • Familiarize yourself with how Platform Engineering teams work today, and why they've made the choices they've made thus far.

90 Days

  • Help Platform Engineering teams translate our business strategy and our customers’ needs into team priorities and roadmaps.
  • Help Platform Engineering teams define service level objectives that keep customers happy while allowing developers to swing for the fences.

6 Months

  • Ensure that cross-team systems and architectural discussions are fully accounting for the needs of our business, and proactively bring the needed perspectives into those conversations.
  • Ensure we are growing Platform Engineering according to our business needs. Recruit and hire engineers, and strengthen a thriving, customer-first culture.
