The Toast POS app is the central pillar of Toast’s restaurant products. Every day, many thousands of servers, hosts, bartenders, and chefs use Toast’s POS to serve millions of guests! Our team strives to make their experience as smooth and efficient as possible. At Toast, Android isn’t just one of multiple mobile platforms -- Android is the foundational technology stack for our POS products. Toast even designs and sells our own specialized Android tablets so we can provide the best products to our customers.  

Our POS app powers the restaurant’s most critical workflows (taking orders, getting tickets to the kitchen, making payments) across a coordinated network of tablets and peripherals that are used heavily all day long. The POS must work at the speed of the restaurant, and it needs to keep running no matter what happens. Addressing these demanding requirements requires pushing our technology stack to the limits.   

While the technical challenges are demanding, the impact of our work on our customers is tangible and direct. When we deliver new features, we can improve the staff’s job satisfaction, the guest experience, and the restaurant’s bottom line. The software we deliver helps our restaurants thrive in the face of today’s ever-changing restaurant landscape.  

We are adding a Director of Engineering to lead the Boston-based teams building Toast’s POS app. This Director will lead and inspire their teams to deliver innovative software products with a high degree of quality. They will grow and evolve their team to meet the needs of our customers today and prepare our product for the future. As a key leader on one of Toast’s most essential products, this person will have a significant impact on the direction of Toast in the years to come.      

About this roll* (Responsibilities) 

  • Lead an organization of 5-6 teams focused on building the Toast POS app 
  • Directly manage and mentor Engineering Managers and Team Leads 
  • Identify talent needs and drive recruiting process for teams 
  • Partner with product management and technical leaders to establish long-term strategy and near-term plans 
  • Accountable for delivering business impact via sustainable and high-quality technical solutions
  • Drive evolution of team processes through entire SDLC including planning, design, implementation, quality, release and support 
  • Develop systems to measure progress and monitor risks

  • Experience delivering mobile products to a large customer base 
  • Experience in mobile codebases with dozens of developers  
  • Familiar with cloud development practices 
  • History of delivering business impact with multiple teams 
  • Proven ability to build and grow teams through recruiting and professional development
  • Collaborative and solution-oriented partner to business and product leaders 
  • Talented problem solver across technical, organizational, and interpersonal domains
