Conceptual Aircraft Design Engineer
Job Qualifications:
Aurora Flight Sciences is currently seeking a mid-level engineer to join the Advanced Concepts Group of the Cambridge Research and Technology Center. In this role, the candidate will pursue advanced research in aerodynamics, modelling and multi-disciplinary optimization in a fast-paced development environment and contribute to the maturation of unconventional aircraft configurations for both commercial and military applications. The candidate will be expected to conceive and evaluate clean-sheet concepts making use of a variety of enabling technologies, and support these programs from preliminary design through fabrication and flight test.
The successful candidate will possess a varied, multi-disciplinary background and a willingness to accept multiple roles in a variety of technical areas, as required by active programs. The successful candidate will also have significant experience with aircraft conceptual design, selection and use of analysis tools across a range of modelling fidelities and the use of optimization in design.
Specific Responsibilities:
Support research efforts in conceptual-level aerodynamic design, analysis, and optimization, including multi-disciplinary and multi-fidelity design
Investigate evolving technologies, materials and manufacturing processes in support of ongoing and future programs and conceive novel aircraft configurations leveraging developments in these areas
Perform trade studies on systems and components of advanced concepts and existing platforms
Support requirements definition, conceptual/preliminary layout, and detailed analysis for air vehicle systems
Design, build, and test prototype vehicles and subsystems
Present detailed data and design recommendations based on findings
You will likely be attempting to solve problems that are poorly defined by the stakeholders (customers). You must be able to think creatively and independently about how to turn vague inputs into executable projects.
Minimum Requirements:
Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related degree with 3+ years of applicable experience or Bachelor’s degree with 5+ years of applicable experience
Experience with multidisciplinary optimization and vehicle sizing
Experience with first principles aerodynamics for design-based analysis
Demonstrated ability to rapidly prototype and vet design concepts
Candidate must be hands-on and motivated
Excellent writing and presentation skills
Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident
Desired Experience:
PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related degree
Strong knowledge of manufacturing and prototyping techniques
Familiarity with standard CAD packages (e.g. Solidworks or Catia)
Familiarity with a range of aerodynamic, structural, aeroelastic and propulsive analysis tools, at several levels of fidelity
Experience in validation of analysis results against other sources, such as flight test
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to support travel
