The Opportunity:As athenahealth expands services across the continuum of care, serving hospitals will be critical to our success. athenaClinicals, our award winning EHR offering, is disrupting the status quo of expensive, inflexible software by building a network with a unique combination of cloud-based software, knowledge, and services. As part of the Emerging Services division, you will fill a critical role on our product development team where you will drive product design and deployment of our hospital service offering, in a fast-paced, adrenaline-rich environment, allowing athenahealth to drive efficiency, reduce work, and increase revenue for hospitals across the country.

Position Summary:
The Director of Product Management is responsible for leadership and ownership of a group of product areas within the overarching Clinicals Product’s portfolio. This includes working closely with Service Line leaders, key customers, and client organization staff to understand their product vision. You will lead a team of direct/indirect reports to successfully understand and respond to trends in the marketplace that impact future vision and roadmaps for your product portfolio; groom actionable backlogs of user stories for the Engineering team; and assist Product Management leadership in driving overall growth and effectiveness across the entire product’s scope.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Product Portfolio Ownership

  • Manage ongoing backlog allocations and prioritization of customer jobs to solve across product portfolio, coaching direct reports to do the same for their area of ownership
  • Act as an expert in market and competition for your services; Understand what's next and when to stay the course
  • Articulate the product vision, understand the business problems that we need to solve
  • Define and be accountable for the product success metrics including gross margin, Net Promoter Score, and KLAS rankings
  • Act as primary voice of product decisions within the organization
  • Represent the customer; responsible for end-to-end customer journey and touchpoints
  • Make critical business decisions including pricing and build vs. buy
  • Accountable for the portfolio and product strategy through creation of product roadmaps

Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Speak for the product and ensure alignment in the overall strategy
  • Drive PRSM/portfolio planning process for assigned product area
  • Remove blockers/obstacles to effective and efficient product delivery for Product Owners and their scrum teams
  • Drive all Product Launch decisions including the management of all alpha/beta feedback
  • Manage the priorities and expectations of multiple stakeholders (eg. customer, sales, partners) to gain inputs to portfolio
  • Engage Product Marketing on the best ways to communicate the product to customers; have editorial ownership of the service description
  • Lead, inspire, and develop a team of athenistas, modeling effective relationship building, ensuring high employee engagement and managing staff career progression
  • Contribute to workforce planning, staffing/forecasting of resource requirements, continually assessing and optimizing team structure as well as processes, policies and procedures to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness direct/indirect reports

Education, Experience, & Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Degree (Bachelor’s or Masters) in Computer Science, Business, or Product Design preferred
  • Understanding of healthcare / health IT environment preferred
  • 10+ years relevant product management experience
  • Technical understanding (mobile, SaaS, data) – ability to gut check technical feasibility and timelines and remove technical development barriers
  • Experience bringing products to market
  • Understanding of product management best practices, including agile development environments; Agile certification a plus
  • Demonstrated success at driving innovation in a dynamic environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience leading teams and managing direct reports

  • Ability to align execution to organizational vision by prioritizing and multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment in order to drive results against several projects simultaneously
  • Excellent communication skills, executive presence, and command of group dynamics in order to drive team and stakeholders to effective decisions or consensus
  • Travel required, predicting 20-30%; time may vary and will include client site visits, conferences, trade shows, Sales and Marketing events, and trainings
