Since its creation less than 3 years ago, HubSpot’s Business Intelligence team has become mission critical to how we run and manage our business. Every business unit relies on our BI systems for self-service, actionable, and accurate information. Our systems power 15,000+ queries per day, hundreds of active users, dozens of data model developers - and all of these numbers are growing quickly.

To prepare for the next several years of growth in the impact that the BI team has on the company, HubSpot is creating a brand new, focused leadership role: Director of Business Intelligence. This is a hands-on Director role responsible for the BI team’s people leadership, direction, and impact on our business.

Today our BI team is primarily in the business of managing a data lake and developing usable, extensible data models that can be leveraged by analysts across the company to meet a variety of management and operational reporting needs. Our work and focus is centered on customer data. As a highly dynamic SaaS business that aspires to grow for decades to come, understanding customers is our lifeblood. And while our team is providing a strong ROI to the business today, we’re only scratching the surface of what’s possible. Going forward we have ambitions of doing much, much more. This role will lead the team to realize those ambitions.

Here are some examples of the types of hard problems that you will be responsible for solving with your team. If these sound exciting, please apply.

  • How do we continue to run a hybrid model of centralized & distributed analysis and data model development that works for our business? Is this the right model?
  • How do we strike the right balance between raw and aggregated data so that things business consumers expect to be easy truly are easy, while also enabling the modern, skilled technical analyst?
  • How can we maximize the percentage of our time spent generating actionable insights within the context of our data environment?
  • What do we need to do differently as we scale to multiples of the number of developers and active users in our systems?
  • How do we design our systems to support new, high potential analytics use cases such as machine learning?
  • How do we exert more influence on our key stakeholders and source system owners in a fast changing environment where source systems undergo frequent, large-scale change?
  • How can we make HubSpot a standout magnet for data talent around the world so that we can get and stay ahead of the needs of the business?
  • How can we make the processes underpinning our data development lifecycle (analogous to a modern SDLC) so good that our people can focus on the things that create real value for the business?
  • How will our infrastructure need to evolve to smoothly support all of the above?

We like to focus on the job to be done and not a list of backward-looking requirements. With that being said, here are some things we’ll be looking for as we assess candidates:

  • Technical proficiency in at least one, but ideally multiple, facets of BI. The data & BI org of the future will be much more technical than it is today.
  • Experience expanding and growing teams.
  • Track record of successfully tackling truly difficult challenges.
  • Extraordinary business acumen.
  • Comfort with change and comfort questioning the status quo.
