Summary:

Are you passionate about user interface design? Do you enjoy researching the latest technologies and novel interface designs and interaction methods? We are seeking a Senior Human Computer Interface (HCI) / Human Systems Interface (HSI) design researcher to lead and support cutting edge research on emerging user interfaces and interaction methods ranging from Augmented Reality (AR) – based interfaces, novel gestures, auditory displays, data visualizations, and cutting edge user interface design approaches and their application to real world problems.

In this role, you will build off of your background in User Interface Design, Cognitive Systems Engineering, Human Factors, or related expertise to lead and support research and design efforts on a variety of platforms and applications. You will work with small teams of research scientists and software engineers to develop interactive prototypes as part of a user-centered design process. You will employ principled and creative approaches to move from research concepts to design prototypes, and ultimately oversee development into functional software systems. The systems engineering process you will contribute to include knowledge elicitation, requirements analysis, and prototyping new user interactions through dynamic mock-ups that ensure exceptional design execution.

You will work with our scientists and software engineers to analyze requirements, combine scientific and creative approaches to user interface design, and collaborate in implementing these designs in elegant human machine interfaces and decision support systems. You will support evaluation and application of research ideas throughout the systems engineering process and create documentation of your results for technical and scientific presentation.

Major Responsibilities/Activities:

  • Study/model/understand diverse customer needs in complex systems
  • Research, design, and evaluate novel human machine interfaces and their application to direct real world applications for our customers
  • Coordinate day-to-day responsibilities to other scientists and software engineers to implement solutions
  • Conduct technical discussions with customers with support from other scientists
  • Write and contribute to proposals, reports, and papers
  • Present work at briefings and conferences

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Strong portfolio of interface design and writing that shows high quality of work
  • Strong aesthetic design sense and functional reasoning skills with superior attention to detail
  • Strong verbal and written skills to support proposal writing, interaction with customers, and presentations at technical conferences
  • Master’s degree in Cognitive Systems Engineering, Human Factors, Interaction Design, or Cognitive Science (or a related field) or a strong track record conducting research and development in these areas
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience creating systems engineering and user-experiences and leading teams
  • Interest in and ability to apply leading design trends and data science techniques to support

Nice to Have: 

  • Ph. D. in Cognitive Systems Engineering, Human Factors, Interaction Design, or Cognitive Science (or a related field) or a strong track record conducting research and development in these areas
  • Military Service or DoD work experience
  • Technical or peer-reviewed publications in any of the above fields
  • Domain experience addressing autonomous systems, intelligence analysis, or tactical aviation display methods
  • Multimodal human machine interface design (e.g., gesture, auditory displays, augmented reality-based displays) skills and experience designing and evaluating prototypes
