The Mission

NeighborSchools is on a mission to reinvent child care from the ground up.

Today in America, working-parents with young children spend over $75B a year on child care, but the caregivers, the hard-working women* who actually work hands-on with our children, they get paid peanuts. The problem is that big child care centers are so expensive to run that they have to charge parents a ton, and there's still very little left over for the caregivers. This forces the best caregivers to leave child care in search of better wages, and leaves families struggling to find quality care.

At NeighborSchools, we've developed a new solution that puts people first. We help individual caregivers go independent, get licensed, open up micro-daycares in their homes, and work directly with families in the community. Caregivers that launch daycares on NeighborSchools earn 2-3X more than preschool teachers, even while charging parents less for child care. And children benefit from the small, intimate settings and programs led by experienced professionals. That's the win-win-win.

Our goal is to help a million caregivers launch new, independent daycares in the next 10 years and bring quality, affordable child care to every neighborhood in America.

* over 99% of prospective daycare providers signing up for NeighborSchools are women.

The Role

Lead all things design at NeighborSchools. You'll be our first design hire and own everything from product design, working with our CEO & CTO, to our brand identity and marketing campaigns. You'll set the vision and roll up your sleeves and ship designs, assets, and generally do the needful.

We believe design matters, especially as an emerging brand in a high-consideration category like child care. The caregivers we support are truly amazing, and our brand and our Brand/UI/UX needs to be good enough to match.

Our product is bigger than you might imagine. Think of all the complexity built into a product like Turbotax - and how important good design is to making complicated workflows simple, approachable, and maybe even a bit fun. And then think of Airbnb, and all the micro-interactions that bring the platform to life. We're taking the best from both, and we have a lot of work to do.

This is an opportunity to join a high-growth, mission-driven startup and directly impact the success of our customers. You'll work directly with our CEO and collaborate with our Customer Success, Product & Engineering, and Marketing teams.

First-hand experience finding and enrolling in child care is a plus, but not a requirement.

Experience & Skills

  • Strong product design foundation: you can flex into visual design and brand identity, but you're rock solid in UI/UX and enjoy working hands on with PMs and engineers to design beautiful, simple, usable products and features
  • A design mindset: you appreciate good design across all mediums and are always studying other products, brands, and goods. You're informed and have a defined sense of
  • 2-4 years experience in high-growth startup: you've directly contributed to the growth of a strong brand. You know the playbook, even if there are things you'd do differently next time around
  • Ability to work independently & as a team: with a one-month onboarding, we expect you to own your own calendar, work towards your goals, and ask for help when you need it. We collaborate a lot, but we don’t micromanage; we expect everyone to take initiative and work directly with teammates across the company.
  • Be resourceful & organized: we’re an early-stage startup (

If you meet some but not all of the qualifications here, and you’re passionate about our mission and this opportunity, we hope you’ll apply anyway.
