MassMutual is a leading consumer financial services company with enduring, dynamic franchises in insurance and asset management. A mutually owned company ranked in the Fortune 100, MassMutual's interests are uniquely aligned with those of its policyholders. In a world of declining institutional trust, and economic uncertainty, MassMutual has the strength, scale, and distinctive mutual ownership structure to “break through” as a growing franchise helping people secure their futures and protect the ones they love.

As further context, the company is currently undergoing a far-reaching and sustained effort to transform itself by, among other steps: building a new 1,000-person office located in Boston's dynamic Seaport District, re-conceptualizing its portfolio of businesses worldwide (+$12 billion of M&A transactions in the past three years alone), and investing in new digital franchises to serve Millennial-aged consumers more effectively (for example, HavenLife).

OPPORTUNITY

This market-leading financial services company is seeking a results-driven, engaging and dynamic leader for our Strategy Team. Within this role, the Strategy Lead will drive the thought leadership, stakeholder engagement, and team leadership for highly visible and impactful strategic problem-solving efforts throughout the company. Since the problem-solving efforts are priority topics for the Executive Team, they are truly an opportunity to help shape MassMutual's strategic agenda and drive long-term performance.

The Strategy Lead will be joining a broader, integrated team of the Strategy, Consumer & Market Insights and Corporate Development functions. This collaboration creates unique opportunities for insights, impact, and team building in the collective pursuit of advancing the company's corporate agenda. Across these functions, the group consists of approximately 20 professionals, with experienced team members having prior experience at top-tier consulting firms and investment banks. The Strategy Lead will report to the Head of the Strategy and Consumer & Market Insights functions.

Strategy Leads will provide direction to Analysts within our group within our problem-solving efforts. The cultivation, coaching, and mentoring of our Analysts is incredibly important. In turn, our Analysts provide our Strategy Leads with the leverage they need to grow and take on more responsibility. In addition, Strategy Leads take on leadership roles in the recruitment, training, and ongoing development of our Analysts.

Strategy Leads will have compelling opportunities for significant professional advancement within MassMutual; other Strategy Leads have advanced to leadership roles for Senior Executives within business lines and advanced within the Strategy Function.

This opportunity:

Is structurally distinct (e.g., work for a mutual company deeply committed to its customers and long-term performance, collaborate within a group that includes Corporate Development and Consumer & Market insights, work with leaders across the company that highly value and desire the capabilities you bring to the table) Takes the best of external consulting (e.g., opportunity for strategic impact, exposure to senior executives, coaching, team leadership, and professional growth) Removes the downsides of external consulting (e.g., potential misalignment of incentives, travel, non-strategic projects, excess PowerPoint)

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Drive substantive strategic problem-solving efforts – thought leadership (e.g., defining key questions and problem-solving hypothesis), stakeholder engagement (e.g., leading stakeholder interactions and providing constructive challenge), and team leadership (e.g., leading the research/analysis with our Analysts)
  • Help build the team – develop our Analysts for our ongoing Analyst program (e.g., providing active coaching/feedback, serving as a developmental manager or mentor, leading part of our recruiting and training efforts)
  • Role model behaviors (e.g., high energy, self-driven, strong interpersonal skills, intellectual curiosity, highest level of professionalism, inclusive behaviors, orientation towards client and team instead of self)
  • Positively impact the company's “course and speed” as part of an integrated effort with MassMutual's Strategy, Corporate Development and Consumer & Market Insights teams

REQUIREMENTS

  • 2 to 5 years of strategy consulting experience (must be highly rated), inclusive of experience leading substantive portions of project teams
  • Strategy consulting experience should be from a top-tier management / strategy consulting firm or a similar role with a leading internal strategy function
  • Bachelor's degree in Economics or Financial Discipline from leading college or university; graduate degree is valued, but not a requirement
  • Track record of developing Analysts through coaching and mentoring
  • Ability to quickly break down problems in a structured manner, and prioritize analysis
  • Ability to analyze complex data and draw out insights and implications
  • Ability to create simple, powerful, and data-driven communications for senior leaders
  • Ability to effectively communicate with senior leaders and build enduring, trust based and high-impact relationships with clients and other colleagues
  • Financial services experience is valued, but not a requirement

LEADERSHIP IMPERATIVES

  • Creates an environment of trust through integrity, straightforwardness and competency
  • Inspires high performance, demands accountability
  • Fosters diversity and innovation; thrives in and bolsters a collaborative environment
  • Thoughtfully and constructively both challenges and partners with others
  • Drives timely, high-quality decision making
