What if nature could be harnessed to help farmers sustainably feed the planet? Since 2014, Indigo has questioned agriculture's full value chain to improve grower profitability, environmental sustainability, and consumer health. The company’s scientific discoveries and digital innovations have amplified new value from soil to sale, benefiting more than 10,000 growers to date. Indigo is also the company behind The Terraton Initiative, a global effort to drawdown one trillion tons of atmospheric carbon dioxide by unlocking the potential of agricultural soils. In 2019, Indigo was ranked #1 on CNBC’s Disruptor 50 list. Headquartered in Boston, MA, Indigo has additional offices in Memphis, TN; Research Triangle Park, NC; Sydney, Buenos Aires, Argentina; Basel, Switzerland; and São Paulo, Brazil.

The Soil Carbon Science team, an interdisciplinary group of scientists at the heart of Indigo’s carbon credit program, is looking to hire a Soil Carbon Scientist to quantify the climate benefits of adopting regenerative land-management practices. Sample collection and analysis protocols that balance scientific rigor with commercial feasibility are crucial to the success of Indigo’s Carbon program. Development and evolution of these protocols is driven by field experiments that can pressure-test assumptions and guide business decisions for how soil data should be collected and interpreted. The scientist in this role will design field experiments, analyze and interpret results for a variety of stakeholders, and author publications that will enhance the scientific credibility of our Carbon program. Implementing nature-based solutions to climate change will require innovative approaches to soil science. The Scientist in this role will be at the cutting-edge of technological advances that will enable revolutionary advances in agricultural sustainability at a continental scale.

Responsibilities:

  • Become an expert in the soil sampling SOPs for Indigo’s commercial and experimental programs
  • Become familiar with Indigo’s experimental program and how it relates to our commercial Carbon program
  • Become familiar with stakeholders and key points of contact for collecting soils and management data from growers
  • Own the process of updating soil sampling SOPs for commercial Carbon program
  • Analyze and interpret data from previous field experiments that will inform our Carbon program
  • Bolster development of protocols for large-scale field experiments that will inform our commercial Carbon program
  • Co-own discussions of how to handle edge cases during soil sampling
  • Own the connection between biogeochemical models and experimental design of soil data collection
  • Work with Field Experimentation team to develop a roadmap for writing peer-reviewed publications of Indigo field experiments to support Carbon program
  • Collaborate with Field Experimentation team to write peer-reviewed publications of Indigo Field Experiments that advance scientific partnership and support the credit generation potential of our commercial Carbon program
  • Develop a roadmap to improve our process and documentation of collecting soils data to support the Carbon program
  • Develop roadmap of field experiments to support Indigo’s commercial Carbon program

Competencies:

  • Strong cross-team collaborative communication
  • Strong technical expert in soil science, preferably in an agronomic context
  • Enjoys leading and collaborating in an interdisciplinary environment
  • Able to communicate complicated scientific concepts to a variety of audiences, including growers, software developers, agronomists, and business executives
  • Balance between being very detailed oriented and operations minded
  • Experience designing field experiments and plot layouts
  • Prepared to consider scientific experimentation and field sampling at the scale of thousands of growers and millions of acres
  • Thrives within ambiguity; capable of creating clarity through organization and prioritization
  • Excels at maintaining clear documentation
  • Frequently assembles and interprets data from multiple sources (specifically, agronomic field data from a multi-region or large geographical areas spanning many environments) to drive decisions to meet business or scientific objectives
  • Completes necessary tasks, even menial ones, with joy
  • Can clearly think through and diagram complicated logic trees

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D in Soil Science or relevant domain. Industry experience preferred
  • Familiarity with data analysis software (Python, R, SQL, Github, etc.) preferred
  • Soil sampling experience required
  • Experience performing soil lab analysis (dry combustion, nutrient testing, soil texture) and interpreting lab results strongly preferred
  • Experience with project management software or customer facing applications is a plus
