This team is tasked with managing, tuning, and developing usability features around a number of database flavors. We work to achieve maximum performance, uptime, and availability, as well as maintain a large fleet of database systems using automation / infrastructure as code. Tripadvisor is currently looking for a talented Database Platform Ops team lead with both technical and leadership experience for its HQ office in Needham, MA. This leader will own administration and engineering for a database platform supporting hundreds of logical database systems (both live site and back-office facing). The ideal candidate will be responsible for fast-paced complex distributed database environments supporting primarily OLTP on a Linux platform. Successful candidates will have the ability to rapidly troubleshoot complex technical problems under pressure.

Technical:

• You are an expert in at least one database flavor managing massive high transaction, Tier 1 database systems
• You have depth in database technologies, specifically high performance systems.
• You have hands on experience with both RDBMS and NoSQL database engines, preferentially Postgres and Cassandra
• You have experience automating away toil and other administrative tasks using Ansible, Chef, or other similar tools.
• You have hands on experience running large database systems exceeding several terabytes.
• You can get your hands dirty. You are hands-on when needed. This role is a player/coach that lets you stay technical while giving you the opportunity to lead others.
• Software development experience is a huge plus.

Leadership:

• You have consistently driven improvements and work hard to identify true root causes of systemic issues and fix them rather than apply band-aids.
• You can write and present effectively. You have experience with authoring roadmap documents and project plans. You are able to speak with clarity and influence to entry level engineers and technical/business leadership alike.
• You are curious, you take the time to learn and stay abreast of upcoming technologies and industry trends.
• You have an interest to learn about your customers businesses and challenges and ensure that your team is aligned with these priorities.
• You have experience mentoring junior team members and influencing their work and development. 

Necessary Qualifications:

• BS or MS in Computer Science or related technical field
• Strong understanding of data structures and algorithms
• Fluent in at least one statically typed, object-oriented language (such as Java, C++, or C#) and one scripting language (such as Python, JavaScript, Perl, Ruby)
• Experience in an operations role supporting a 24/7 production environment, or ownership of personal internet-accessible servers operating 24/7
• Organized, good attention to details, and able to work both independently and with a team
• Comfortable in a fast-paced operations environment with frequent interruptions and irregular hours
• Strong written and verbal communications in English 

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience with a full web serving stack, including databases, logging, and monitoring
• Experience leading or managing teams
• Knowledge of performance tuning and system load assessment
• 3+ years of experience running massive scale database systems in AWS RDS or on prem.
• Postgres or Cassandra Experience is a plus
