About the role:

Embark is growing rapidly, and data is at the center of what is a huge opportunity ahead. As a data engineer on the Science and Data Platforms team, you will be responsible for expanding and optimizing our data infrastructure to provide teams with seamless access to data. We are looking for talented engineers who are excited to help shape the future of our data and analytical platforms, all of which are built to empower our business and accelerate our ability to provide more meaningful and actionable insights for our customers who are looking to better care for and extend the life of their dogs. What you’ll do:

  • Develop and maintain scalable data pipelines to support increases in data volume and complexity
  • Build the infrastructure required for optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from wide variety of sources 
  • Collaborate with engineering and business teams to improve data models, increase data accessibility, and enable data driven decision making across the organization
  • Assemble, curate, and normalize complex datasets that meet current and future business requirements
  • Identify, design and implement solutions that improve data acquisition, reliability, efficiency, and quality
  • Prepare, cleanse, and load data for ad hoc analysis 
  • Participate in daily scrum meetings and collaborate with other agile team members
  • Participate in code reviews and promote the adoption of best practices

What experience we’re looking for:

  • 5+ years of professional experience with modern data platform solutions
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline or equivalent professional experience
  • Hands-on experience building and optimizing data pipelines, architectures, and datasets
  • A successful history of acquiring, transforming, and extracting value from large disconnected datasets
  • Expert SQL knowledge and experience working with relational and NoSQL databases (ex: Postgres, Redshift, DocumentDB, etc)
  • Understanding of key database design concepts and how they impact and enhance data models
  • Proficient with one or more modern cloud data platform technologies (AWS, S3, EC2, RDS, Redshift, Glue, etc.) or other major cloud provider’s products
  • Experience with ETL/ELT workflows, patterns, and vendor tools
  • Knowledge of object-oriented or scripting languages (ex: Python, Java, etc.)
  • Knowledge of data pipeline and workflow management tools such as Airflow, Glue, Luigi, etc.
  • Experience with Agile software development practices (story grooming, sprint planning, and retrospectives)
  • Strong desire to and aptitude for learning new technologies and patterns
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage colleagues and stakeholders across all levels of the organization
