The Opportunity:This is a great opportunity for a person with a passion for healthcare to do cutting-edge research that helps physicians serve their patients better.
Through our cloud-based provider network—the nation’s largest, with more than 100,000 providers—athenahealth has unparalleled visibility into physician practice and health system operations. The athenaResearch team is responsible for using this data to study our top-performing clients and share insights and best practices that help everyone on our network perform better. We share the lessons we learn with both clients and prospects at leadership institutes and roundtables across the country, through webinars, and on athenaInsight. We also partner with client-facing teams to equip our colleagues who work closely with clients to drive improved performance.

Position Summary:
This role has an ambitious charter:

  • to generate new knowledge about physician, practice, and health system operations that drives meaningful performance improvement;
  • to contribute to industry thought leadership; and
  • to create insights that create value for teams product, marketing, and other teams across athenahealth.

To accomplish that work, the Physician Performance Research Associate will be responsible for coordinating and participating in interviews with high-performing clients, distilling key takeaways from those conversations, helping to synthesize qualitative and quantitative insights to frame our understanding of the issue, and developing presentations and white papers that effectively teach what we have learned. Secondary responsibilities include collaborating with athenaInsight writers and graphic designers on stories and data visualizations, developing independent quantitative analyses, and conducting external research on topics related to core research themes, topical public health and policy issues, and broader athenahealth strategy.
Responsibilities with rough time allocations, will include the following:
25% Interviewing high-performing clients and external exemplars as part of our major research initiatives

  • Conduct interviews with senior executives that elicit thoughtful commentary and detail replicable client strategies and demonstrated best practices
  • Identify interview candidates based on athenaNet data, with an eye toward balancing specialties, geographies, sizes, and business models of interviewees
  • Distill from interviews the most compelling and actionable insights and lessons

25% Supporting the overall design and execution of research initiatives

  • Help design the scope of the research initiative: what are the stakes, major questions, and appropriate deliverables
  • Serve as a creative thought partner in developing key takeaways and understanding the implications of what we hear in interviews and see in the data
  • Synthesize lessons from interviews and quantitative analyses into best practices, organizational attributes, or other frameworks
  • Propose, and in some cases conduct, quantitative analyses that answer critical research questions

15% Developing slide presentations, speeches, white papers, and articles that describe compelling, actionable insights from our research

  • Create slide presentations and associated speeches that help provider and executive audiences understand and implement lessons and best practices we uncover
  • Obtain client sign-off for use of case studies and best practice profiles
  • Customize existing presentations for new audiences for specialty forums, on-site client presentations, and other venues

15% Conducting external research on topics related to public health, policy, and industry trends

  • Research topics relevant to the data slices our team provides for athenaInsight; in the past, this has included Lyme disease trends, physician burnout, and FQHC reimbursement policy
  • As we develop athenahealth’s new brand platform, identify external research and proof points that illuminate both the problems we are trying to solve and the value of solving them

10% Managing interview logistics, including working with account management and clients to schedule calls and handle follow-up

  • Identify the best candidates to interview from our data and external research
  • Work with account management and sales teams associated with client and prospect organizations
  • Coordinate interviewee sign-off so we can share their stories through athenaInsight and elsewhere

10% Partnering with athenaInsight, PR/social teams, and others on earned coverage

  • Track media mentions related to athenaResearch data slices
  • Prepare internal briefs and research findings in preparation for interviews with media outlets
  • Identify data proof points related to athenaInsight profiles and case studies
