Investment Research Analyst - Fundamental Credit Analyst
The Opportunity:
As an Investment Research Analyst, you are responsible for the fundamental credit analysis, evaluation, recommendation and on-going monitoring of MassMutual Investment Management’s portfolio of fixed income investments, including high yield and investment grade public and private corporate bonds, loans, and asset backed investments, accessed through separately managed accounts, mutual funds, ETFs and insurance dedicated funds (“Global Fixed Income”) in collaboration with the Global Fixed Income team members.
The Impact You’ll Have:
This position will support all aspects of the Global Fixed Income platform, including but not limited to, underwriting investment opportunities, portfolio and specific credit research, monitoring, reporting, forecasting and communications, analytics and modeling, and supporting/leading special projects. You’ll identify success by being seen as a key resource in the resolution of complex problems and by being a critical member on teams that are focused on solving these problems.
The Global Fixed Income team operates as part of MassMutual Investment Management (“IM”). IM manages the asset allocation and asset liability management for MassMutual’s $150 billion General Investment Account (“GIA”). IM monitors and oversees the performance of both affiliated and unaffiliated managers for the GIA and directly selects certain opportunistic and strategic investments for the GIA.
Responsibilities in this role:
- The primary responsibility of the Investment Research Analyst is the “ownership” of the opportunities and risk across a broad platform of fixed income investments and to provide investment decision recommendations.
- Execute fundamental credit analysis of individual holdings within various fixed income asset classes and recommendations of action where necessary
- Research, underwrite, analyze, and monitor multiple fixed income asset classes including bringing names and/or strategies through the investment committee(s)
- Provide investment decision recommendations that are aligned to our investment philosophy and fit our long-term strategy
- Working with owned and/or outside asset managers to review their General Investment Account fixed income portfolios, strategy and performance and provide recommendations to senior leadership of Global Fixed Income
- Conduct In-depth research of various investment-related topics relative to evaluation of potential investment opportunities as well as current GIA holdings.
- Accurate maintenance of existing credits and strategies in accordance with Departmental Standard Work.
- Quantitative and qualitative review at least quarterly of the analyst’s assigned investments and performance grading in accordance with Department Standard Work.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree
- At least 5 years of relevant fundamental fixed income credit analyst experience
- At least two years high yield and/or distressed corporate credit experience, or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity and ideally expertise with Environmental, Social, and Governance investing
- Interest in finance/investments, with basic accounting knowledge
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skill set
- Ability to work closely with portfolio managers and senior management
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work in a fast paced, team environment
- Ability and openness to understanding operational, accounting, and legal aspects of investments
- Ability to work independently, make recommendations and collaborate effectively with others
- MBA or CFA (or enrolled as a CFA candidate)
