Position Summary: As a Business Intelligence & Data Analytics Manager you will combine problem-solving, data analysis, and technical skills to identify, quantify, and solve real-world healthcare workflow problems. This position involves working closely with colleagues and leadership across athenahealth’s Integration Services functions, performing a prominent role in the analysis, visualization and reporting of data insights and trends aimed to deliver prescriptive, actionable solutions to stakeholders across the organization. You will drive operational excellence by converting data into critical knowledge that can be used to make tactical and strategic business decisions across Integration Services.

Essential Functions (Duties and Responsibilities): 35% [Lead the creation and ongoing improvement of a vision and strategy for the governance of business intelligence and data analytics across Integration Services]

  • Establish and implement a vision and strategy for gathering and managing data requirements and disseminating performance metrics & analytics across Integration Services
  • Lead projects to develop a methodology, reports and dashboards that provide insight into the various Integration Services functions and recommend plans and solutions that improve operations
  • Lead the development of data delivery processes to enable self-service analytics where possible
  • Identify new opportunities that drive significant improvement to operational performance (effectiveness, efficiency and cost)
  • Mentor junior members of the team

25% [Lead substantial research and analysis projects that span a variety of topics across the Integration Services organization]

  • Engage with internal stakeholders to define and scope analysis projects by leveraging deep understanding of athena database capabilities
  • Create overall project plan and timelines for key deliverables; own all deliverables against timelines
  • Lead and participate in on-going data governance activities to improve the quality and integrity of information data and processes
  • Provide fact-based, compelling insights and recommendations to drive consensus and strategic alignment
  • Develop comprehensive and robust cost benefit analysis to evaluate financial impacts of various initiatives and facilitate prioritization and decision making


20% [Lead analysis into key performance metrics]

  • Discover – and then quantify – drivers and levers through collaboration with internal teams and your own data analysis
  • Translate findings into what is relevant at a business level, and present to internal or external stakeholders
  • Utilize the analysis to help athena make important decisions about product innovations, and enable customers to optimize their business by using our products effectively
  • Produce data insights and visualizations to frame the story of your analysis and recommend additional research based on developed hypotheses
  • Lead the design and development of organizational dashboards and analytical reports using the various visualization and reporting tools

20% [Deliver transparency into performance via monthly reports]

  • Translate findings from the discovery phase above into regular root cause analysis into what is driving a metric
  • Uncover and quantify issues that are driving performance up or down, and work with your internal network of product experts to suggest solutions or next steps
  • Lead the development and continual improvement of interactive tools for leaders and individuals to track their performance against business metric goals
  • Lead the development of standard reports, dashboards and fulfillment of ad hoc data requests on a timely and accurate basis


Education & Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in economics, finance, computer science, business, or a similar quantitative field; Master’s degree or equivalent in public health or related area preferred
  • Minimum 4+ years of progressive experience in managing and leading complex projects focused on data and analytics across multiple domains and content areas
  • Respected leader with business intelligence/analytics, project management, health information technology and/or operational experience
  • Experience utilizing advanced Excel functions to manipulate large data sets
  • Experience with BI Tools such as Tableau, Google Analytics, and Microsoft Power BI a strong plus
  • Significant experience with SQL and willingness to learn at an expert level

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Proven ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to present findings – at a non-technical level – to internal or external stakeholders. Experience communicating results to senior level clients or colleagues
  • Able to solve tough and complex problems using multiple problem-solving tools and techniques; ability to see meaning from available data
  • Results driven; takes personal responsibility for achieving results; reviews and evaluates progress against agreed targets and timelines

  • Excellent attention to detail, and the ability to deliver precise, meaningful results in a fast-paced, deadline-driven setting with rapidly changing priorities
