Geomagical Labs is a 3D R&D lab, in partnership with IKEA. We create magical mixed-reality experiences for hundreds of millions of users, using computer vision, neural networks, graphics, and computational photography. Last year we launched IKEA Kreativ, and are actively preparing our next-generation suite of Kreativ upgrades!

We are seeking a Computer Vision Research Intern, specializing in Deep Learning, to help push the envelope of Indoor 3D Vision & Scene Understanding. During this internship, you will work on high-impact projects spanning areas like depth estimation, segmentation, generative AI, inverse rendering, and 3D reconstruction. The projects are designed to be adventurous but well-scoped for 3–6+ months, with clear objectives and opportunities for publication. Your work will directly shape future Geomagical product capabilities and reach millions of users worldwide. We are looking for highly-motivated & creative individuals with entrepreneurial drive.

Requirements
  • Ph.D. or Master's student in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • Strong foundations in Computer Vision and Deep Learning, with experience in one or more of: Depth Estimation, Semantic Segmentation, Vision Transformers, 3D Reconstruction, Inverse Rendering and Generative AI for images/videos.
  • Proficiency in Python and hands-on experience with PyTorch (or similar ML frameworks).
  • Ability to turn research papers and open-source projects into advanced proof-of-concepts.
  • Experience in preparing datasets, designing experiments, and building evaluation pipelines.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset: self-driven, adventurous, comfortable with uncertainty, and motivated to make ideas work end-to-end in real-world settings.

Benefits
  • Flexible schedule: we are open for internships of varying length, 3 to 6+ months.
  • Join a mission-driven R&D lab, strategically backed by an influential global brand.
  • Work in a dynamic team of Computer Vision, AI, Graphics, and design professionals, and successful serial entrepreneurs.
  • Opportunity to publish novel and relevant research, and potentially see your work in the hands of millions of IKEA customers.
  • Fully remote work available.
  • The USA salary for this internship position ranges from $8,500 to $10,500 a month, which is the equivalent of approximately $51 to $63 an hour. Salary is to be determined by location, role, skill, and experience level.
  • Candidates will also receive a comprehensive set of benefits, as provided for all IKEA employees.
  • Headquartered in downtown Palo Alto, California --- an easy walk from restaurants, coffee shops and Caltrain commuter rail.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
