Our Opportunity: 

Chewy is seeking a highly motivated, passionate, results-oriented Senior Database Engineer to join our exciting, fast-paced team in Boston, MA. Our team is growing and if you are passionate about databases, e-commerce, and career growth, this is a great opportunity! Chewy's database environments are growing significantly with many of the business’s critical IT systems dependent on our database platforms. The Senior Database Engineer will be responsible for the day-to-day support and development of the database environments, ensuring the databases are optimized and online, implementing scalable solutions, and meeting aggressive SLAs. In-depth knowledge and experience in software development is a huge plus.

What you’ll do:

  • Identify, analyze, and solve problems related to database, application, or reporting in a thorough, timely manner
  • Optimize slow-performing queries using tools such as Extended Events, DMVs, Execution Plans
  • Design and implement database objects for high scalability
  • Provide optimal performance in maintenance jobs for the transactional environment
  • Partner with software engineering teams to optimize application and database design for scalability in terms of data volume, data velocity, and user concurrency
  • Implement database designs that provide scalability and redundancy by leveraging technologies native to MS SQL Server, including multi-master configuration, log replication, and advanced indexing and partitioning techniques
  • Anticipate and address security vulnerabilities
  • Training and coaching of the software engineering teams on capabilities of the SQL Server platform to ensure performance and scalability objectives are met
  • Develop and document standards, policies, procedures and key performance metrics that support the continued improvement of IT services

What you’ll need:

  • 7+ years of experience as a Database Engineer, managing Microsoft SQL Server 2008, 2012, 2014, and 2016
  • 7+ years of experience with T-SQL and stored procedures
  • Excellent understanding of coding methods, performance tuning, optimization, and best practices
  • Experience with a systems development or project methodology
  • Data modeling (physical and logical) experience
  • Experience with SSRS, SSIS
  • Extraordinary problem solving skills
  • Experience with third-party tools such as Database Performance Analyzer, Red-Gate, Idera
  • E-commerce or fulfillment systems background is a plus
  • Microsoft SQL Certifications are a plus: Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer (MCSD), Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE)
