At edX, the Documentation Lead is responsible for serving as both a primary individual contributor taking on hands on work as well as a lead to a team of technical writers, supporting the planning and execution of multiple information development projects. This leadership role inspires, mentors, and supports the professional development of documentation team members and strategically participates as an individual contributor.

As an evangelist for edX documentation, you develop and maintain cross-functional relationships with Product, Support, Marketing, Engineering, and Open Source teams to ensure that our product deliverables are effectively designed, developed and integrated with their corresponding information products. You serve as the primary voice of the documentation team throughout the company, working across the organization to integrate and streamline processes that enable the team to deliver excellent experiences for our learners, course teams, developers, and open source community.

As part of this role, you will:

  • Partner with Product, Engineering, Marketing and Education Services to create and execute strategies that work toward achieving the edX vision and mission and business strategy.
  • Mentor, inspire, and guide the documentation team; ensure the talents of each member are being optimized and developed
  • Actively build strong relationships across the organization, including business leadership, marketing, support, product and engineering teams, to craft a world-class experience for edX users
  • Nurture open lines of communication with key stakeholders outside of edX including our partners and open source community
  • Act as a creative thought-leader within the organization, providing perspective and driving innovation around information delivery
  • Use data from a variety of sources to inform your decisions: analytics, A/B tests, social media sentiment, customer service logs, sales data, surveys, interviews, usability tests, contextual research, and other studies
  • Create, and direct the creation of information deliverables

You should have:

  • Experience leading and mentoring documentation teams
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal), negotiation, and problem-solving skills; demonstrated ability to communicate and influence effectively across all organizational levels, including members of the executive team
  • A passion for documentation paired with in-depth, practical knowledge of best practices
  • Experience with information design and delivery across multiple contexts - Web, mobile and beyond
  • Experience within an Agile development framework with a proven track record driving deliverables under tight deadlines
  • 5+ years designing and writing documentation for rich, interactive, consumer or enterprise, web applications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in areas such as human-computer interaction, information science, computer science, social sciences such as psychology, or another related field
