Panorama is on a mission to radically improve student outcomes by helping educators act on data. We're working toward a world where every student has great teachers, great schools, and a great education. Thousands of schools use the Panorama Platform as an important tool for improving education through data, from helping teachers hone their practice, to engaging with families, to building school culture, and beyond. Panorama is rapidly growing: today, more than three million students receive a better education because of Panorama, and we hope to serve many millions more students in the coming years.

Data analytics is central to Panorama’s product. As a Data Scientist at Panorama, you will immerse yourself in the universe of education data, with a focus on identifying important insights about teaching, learning, school operations, and our education system more broadly. You’ll focus on important challenges facing education and identify new ways to use data to address those problems. Today, data science at Panorama includes (and we’ll be excited if you have ideas for expanding this scope):

• Identifying specific learnings from education and sharing the findings through publications, blog posts, conference presentations, and news articles.


• Developing new approaches for using data in education and working with our product and engineering teams to implement these ideas in our product.


• Embedding with product development teams on the algorithms, visualizations, and design choices in Panorama’s product; partnering with product team to support product usage analytics.


• Collaborating with Panorama’s research team to support analysis and evaluation of Panorama’s research initiatives.


• In select cases, partnering with Panorama customers on specific data analysis challenges they face, as a learning and innovation experience. (Note: We are not a data consulting shop; our goal here is learning and product development.)

What We’re Looking For

• At least 3-5 years of academic or professional experience in statistics, data science or other quantitative field


• Experience and insatiable passion for answering hard questions with data; Experience with data viz


• Proficiency with at least one scripting language such as Python or PHP; and at least one analysis tool such as R, Matlab, or SAS


• Passion for education and for helping educators, schools and districts; Hunger to find insights in our data that will lead to remarkably different outcomes for students across the country


• A self-starter: you are able to quickly acclimate yourself to the world of education, if you’re not an expert already, and propose projects that will be important to Panorama, our clients, and the field


• M.S. or Ph.D. in a quantitative field (include scientific fields), or commensurate work experience


• Ability to communicate clearly with Panorama team members who don’t have your technical experience


• Respect for the gravity, sensitivity, and ethical imperatives of this work, given that we are using data from students, families and teachers and providing insights to help schools and district leadership

Bonus Points For:

• Experience in education


• Experience combining data science with research and research literature


• Experience with SQL
