Why two Boston startups are joining forces in the ride-sharing economy

Two Boston startups have joined forces to launch a new bike- and car-share program called "Zipbike" that will help college students around the country get from point A to point B.

Zipcar and Zagster, known for their respective car-sharing and bike-sharing services, plan to have Zipbike up and running by January and offered on 10 universities’ campuses. Zipbike will provide memberships to college students and faculty members at a discounted price so members can have access to cars and bikes without the cost and hassle of ownership.

The two local startups came up with the idea for Zipbike when they noticed an increased desire for shared, multimodal and sustainable transportation on college campuses.

“Transportation preferences are shifting dramatically,” said Jon Terbush, communications manager at Zagster. “Americans want shared methods of transit, and more people are realizing they don’t need to own their own bikes. Zipbike will give access to bikes for all students.”

Terbush said the duo plans to make Zipbike active on 15 college campuses by the end of next year, eventually spreading the network to universities across the country. In October, Zipcar and Zagster plan on solidifying plans for which colleges will pioneer the program.

Individually, Zipcar has vehicles on about 500 campuses, while Zagster has brought bike-sharing to 25 campuses in the country prior to the partnership.

“We want to make bike-sharing the norm on college campuses,” Terbush added.
